Invasion of Advertisers
« on: January 17, 2013, 04:04:24 pm »

It really saddens me to see the growing number of ad accounts popping up. I don't know whether they're done manually or by bots targeting pages with high traffic, but they fill me with dismay. For one, how could they seriously think anyone on this board would click their blatantly off-topic links? Not fooling anyone, and not doing much to divert traffic to their products.

They don't think of course! Mindless swarms of innumerable bots and cybot hybrids. Nasty critters.

It's a shame you can't harvest their remains for stuff to smelt ! Really nasty critters.

Seriously, though, just look in the new users page for product/business sounding names. We must investigate to find these creatures of the night before they suck our master craftsmen dry!

EDIT: adbots / salespeople seem to all have homepages. Mouse over to see if it leads to a business' site. Don't click, it just gives them hits.

Spammers have been a problem for a while. It seems that they're likely manual spammers using humans to get around the forum captchas. This kind of "attack" is hard to crackdown registration-side since you have to start impeding ease of use for genuine community members.

There's been quite a few topics on this already and there's even a few quotes (albeit old) from Toady One.
http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=93877.msg2644467#msg2644467

504 errors are usually caused by Toady having to delete spamposts which a whole bunch of people have replied to. If you see a spam post just report it and move on, try to restrain from clicking links as it just generates them hits.

Can't see why people would waste their time and energy to advertise like that on this forum. They must be desperate or looking for forums without seeing what they are. Perhaps we should get the word out to opportunistic web businesses that their efforts are wasted on us.

Well, I guess that makes sense for people working as advertisers.

We could hire someone to spread the word that every advertiser spamming here would have his website crash and burn... Even the slightest downtime would cause losses that would dissuade them from spamming here.
it would need one or two examples but that may work. I'm not sure it would be completely legal though...

Yeah.. um, that's usually referred to as extortion.  LOL  And planning for something as such is referred to as conspiracy.

So, officially, I must state my disagreement, and attempt to dissuade anyone from doing so.  Just so I'm covered legally, y'know.

I should flag this as spam.

Really.

We know.

Advertisers have been here for awhile. Nothing new here.

Mark advertisers as spam.

It really is depressing to think about the amount of money wasted to get people to put ads on sites where they serve no purpose. But, such is the internet. Hopefully we won't see anything like "the same BS post appended to the first 5 threads in the list" again anytime soon.

It would have been better if you had disguised the link as a spoiler.
