They are literally throwing love and affection at us. Good is subjective, and they think that we did it because we're a heroic force of Good.

And we are going to use this misconception that we are a hero to help our self in the pursuit of more power and status, and possibly condemn them to death in our gods name, so we even out, I think, least in the long run.

We really are in desperate need of some Evil. We just saved potentially thousands of souls, whether deliberate or not this is a massive injury to our being. We may even have saved the world, having pushed the wizards to desperation in the first place is likely the only thing holding us together. I vote for immediate Evil, be it corrupting people here and now, running away to torture a puppy, demanding human sacrifices to prevent the portal from reopening, taking advantage of our perceived goodness to destroy a few souls that do not consider us a threat and are distracted by concerns for those they are familiar with, convincing the assembled masses that this was all their fault, hopefully with the human equivalent of a tantrum spiral ensuing, or just going of a rampage...
