Thanks, Arcvasti.

Oric would definitely have been AWESOME enough to anticipate the attack reflecting on him. This is still the conventional explanation of things, though. Maybe I should have highlighted the parts of the text that are most intriguing?

I want to consider specifically what was going on between Oric and Riltia before Ciro entered the room.

The mention of "snooping" is particularly interesting. Who was snooping on who? And what is wrong particularly with "exploring" as a dungeoneering activity?

This is clearly information FFS has, yet hasn't revealed outright, and while he hasn't made a big mystery of it that doesn't mean that sussing it out can't teach us something useful. I have a couple of mundane ideas which I'll research tomorrow, but even if the answer turns out to be terribly unexciting that's still more information than we had until now.

(Also, Riltia was up to quite a lot on the whole throughout that foray, and we should pick her brains if she has any about it later.)

Riltia only gained her current class this cycle. It's possible that he knew about the passive, but not guaranteed.

I would assume that Oric knows or at least can access data on the capabilities of every single possible class. If the classes are generated by the Warrens, the Warrens doubtless has an archive of their capabilities. Unless I'm wrong, that's how the Scan ability works - it accesses the Warrens database.

Perhaps Rilitia is always the first, because she is the biggest threat to Oric.

It would explain why our first quest was to kill her for no good reason.

Oric wants the Target dead because he's afraid of continuing the cycle!

You know... I just realized...

If this is Madoka fan fiction...
We could be mistaken on a very fundamental level about a few things...

Oric keeps the cycles going in Warrens.
Who kept the cycles going in Madoka?

Then having answered that, answer this:
What is Oric's goal in killing Ciro?

I....

huh.

Could it be that Oric's goal is not to indefinitely perpetuate the cycles, but instead devise a system where eventually, through sheer statistical likelihood, a set of circumstances will arise that render the mechanism or necessity of the cycles meaningless?

Could it be that Oric wants us to do something legitimately unexpected?

Personally I'd say no because this ignores questions like "recreate the prison" and it then brings up the question "Why did Oric not finish off the Last Seraphim?"

In every previous cycle the Target went through all the dungeon levels and defeated Oric. Oric wants to kill Target in order to end the cycles.

There is a mage with near-godlike power. He is nearly dead, and has time for one last spell. He cannot heal himself. Naturally, he goes for revenge on the guy who killed him.

It could be that the Last Seraphim would have some sort of "death trap after death" triggered by death that Oric fears.

Hold on a minute. Now that I think about it, since when was this a Madoka fanfic? I thought it was a Gurren Lagann fanfic.

Well it hit the collective conscious during the Yaos Purification fight.

I have a friend who keeps telling me he thinks I'm on drugs. Lately I've begun to understand why he thinks that.

Also we're suddenly in a lost episode of Puella Magi Madoka?
I wasn't gonna say it, but consider the sentiment echoed. :3

>souls separated from body
>soul energies harvestable via inducing negative emotions like rage/sadness
>girls with magic powers destined to fight each other to the horrible death

If I were that wizard I'd either set up a time-delayed resurrection, if I haven't already (Which I have, multiple times over), or summon someone/something who COULD heal me. Plenty of time for revenge after I get back on my metaphorical feet.
