There's one game in the Essentials engine that does this, but I went with the handwavey TM approach (Al learns spells and then "Spirit Links" them to his Illborn so they can be used in battle).

Rather than spirit link can't you just make the spells inventory items and just be able to put them in the minions inventory, kind of like the way Goombess currently has icicle storm

Again, this is a modified Pokemon game. There exists no such "inventory" for minions.  I could make one, but it seems much more trouble than necessary to overhaul the engine for what is essentially an aesthetic difference.
