The Seven Layers of WarrensSo I'm sure this has come up before, but I don't know in what detail. Massive thread, lots of faff, you know. So my apologies if somebody already brought all this exact stuff up earlier.
Anyway, I think the Warrens is patterned after Dante's Nine Layers of Hell. We know there's at least a DL8 from clearance requirements, and since the Ninth Layer is treachery, and where Satan himself is imprisoned, it might make sense that that's where the Last Seraphim is hidden.
Otherwise, Level 1 is Limbo, which we might better know as the Underside. Since it's not ruled over by any particular Sibling and there's a village of soulless people meandering around in there, that might make it a good fit.
DL2 would be Lust. That's a bit tricky to figure out; neither Proxxy nor the level itself seem overly lustful. It might be worth noting that DL2 was far more prone to change than the other levels we've seen, though; maybe just because we spent so long hanging out in it, but we saw the rooms changing and being deconstructed and so on. Dante's Lust level was also supposed to be fairly chaotic.
This could also potentially explain some things about Proxxy. I mentioned before how utterly bizarre it was that she didn't seem to know anything except "kill evil target lol," which might have to do with her lusts. Maybe she's infatuated with being a mechanic or a Sibling or a master of DL2, and that blinds her to anything that's actually going on?
DL3 would be Gluttony. Haha, oh, hi there Cain, didn't recognize you when you weren't butchering your Siblings to feast on their delicious soul-force. It's also reputed to be full of foul, icy rain, which might explain why it's full of null-water or whatever that stuff is. (As an aside, did we ever figure that out?) Even the level itself could be regarded as greedy, if we take its antimagic properties to be nomming instead of suppression.
Unfortunately that's all we know about for the moment, so it's hard to take the comparison further. The Fourth Circle should be Greed, Fifth Wrath, Sixth Heresy, Seventh Violence, Eighth Fraud, and Ninth Treachery. Oric being the lord of DL8: Fraud would be an interesting facet.
Speaking of interesting facets, we know there's supposed to be Seven Siblings. But since that presumably includes Ciro and/or Riltia, we'd have to assume that Ciro has her own level
and it's probably not Limbo, since that's the obvious choice for being leaderless. That'd be pretty interesting, mmm?
Alternatively, it could maybe be Heresy, since in a place where every level is ruled over by a Sibling,
not having a Sibling ruler would indeed be pretty heretical. I was leaning towards that being Floe's level, though, since Cain notes her as not having changed much like the others, we know she's working with Angels, and another Sibling thinks she's a "weapon," which we're jumping to the conclusion of meaning the key to defeating Oric.
Slight further digging:
Cain refers to The Eye, named Floe, as Four, who in turn refers to him as Two. He calls The Mechanic the First, so we can probably conclude that Floe is native to DL5: Greed. That's interesting.
He also calls her a manipulative bitch and implies she lusts after The Voice, who's in charge of communications.
Looking at this, we've got Proxxy at the bottom left and Oric at the bottom right. Assuming it goes in an upside-down U, skipping us because we can't call ourselves, we get:
DL2, Lust: Proxxy, The Mechanic
DL3, Gluttony: Cain, ? ? ?
DL4, Greed: Floe, The Eye
DL5, Wrath: ? ? ?, The Voice
DL6, Heresy: Ciro, The Target
DL7, Violence: Riltia, ? ? ?
DL8, Fraud: Oric, The Thief
So... that's interesting. Matches some stuff, seems odd elsewhere.
Cain describes The Voice as a lazy, condescending asshole who'd got the "code" right, but mentions that nobody else cares about this "code." Might just be for communications? Sounds bizarre to have Wrath in charge of communications...
Riltia being in charge of Violence is particularly interesting, because she certainly doesn't seem violent. She is a big dumb fighter, but we're not sure how much of that is due to her current class/incarnation. The fact that she ended up with/as a target for us might further the notion of violence as her sphere of influence. Also, there could be subtleties we're not getting here, like how Cain's not fat and Proxxy's not a succubus.
I now kind of want to draw Proxxy as a succubus.
