Isn’t Ciro the target? Rilita’s comment and the statue’s warning make sense if Rilita is supposed to kill Ciro.

Assuming it's as simple as each of them being tasked with killing the other, yeah. Somehow Riltia's actions don't seem exactly in line with that, either from plotting to kill us or having been tasked with it but deciding never to do so (as we've presumably done).

Not to mention that whole 'If you do not slay her, she will slay you' thing.

Yeah, but that could at least be vague avoidable prophecy stuff. It's Riltia's response that makes it sound like something that's currently going on, not just something that's going to at some point come up.

Stash love letter and spellbook, buy refresh potion from arena-side vendor (do not drink yet? the goombas only did 1 dmg at a time, meaning we might be able to finagle an extra HP out of saving it... if anyone else thinks it's worth the risk), drink from fountain until at max SP, do Lost Souls arena battle.

Wait, weren't we DEAD long before riltia drowned in a pool of acid?

Well, Ciro was. 'We' were being Al at the time. If the theory is true that 'We' are the Target as opposed to Ciro, then by using the Ether Star thingy to hop to Al the Target escaped death at the hands of Proxxy's drone thingy and was right there for Riltia's first demise. Then it hopped to Cherish for a while and then went back to Ciro. (The Cain intermission doesn't count, since it didn't involve us 'being' him through use of the Ether Soul.)
