Correct. You can hit an enemy, with a melee weapon, from the other side of a room with a running strike or something like that, but you'll suffer a -4 position penalty for it.

Guys, we have a hopefully presumably maybe willing test subject, especially if we need to clear all the spirits from the room, not just hostile ones.
