Wait.
Void Dragon awakes, gets hold of Death Star.

Oh god. I wish I knew enough of Star Wars to write this. You've filled my brain with beautiful, beautiful images.

I could probably write it. I know a shitpile about WH40K and Star Wars. Even down to vague technical details on the Star Wars side!
How much do you want Hanslanda? $100? $500? I will pay for you to write that.

O.O
Let me get some details figured out on that and I'll see what I can do.

Well i've thought about it for a while. I think that Spartans would be better fighters but the Space Marines would be better soldiers. The Spartans have better biological upgrades for quick battles but would falter when they need to fight for days on end.

Though their weapons would be subpar.

Would crossing RTDs count? I'd like to see how some heroes of random legend would match up against one another.

Very subpar. Unless they brought along some Covenant tech (which the Imperium would go nuts trying to get their hands on), those simple projectile weapons might not even scratch Astartes armor.

Thing is, I'm not even sure if Mjolnir suits are better/higher-tech than SPEHSS Power Armor. Apart from the shields, that is, but those are weak enough that a few shots from a Covenant plasma pistol can pop them. Granted, if the techpriests got their metal tentacles on fast-charging personal energy shields...

But yeah, even in their own pond Spartans are only "demons" in the fluff. When it comes down to actual combat they're better than pretty much anything else in a 1v1 situation, but even something like a squad of high-ranking Elites or a Hunter pair can take them down. They're essentially proto-Astartes with lower tech everything, except the shields. And their weapons? You think something like the dinky little rounds from a MA5B would even give a Space Marine pause? Or that Mjolnir would stand up to bolter fire? A ratio of 3 Spartan-IIs or ~8 Spartan-IIIs per Astartes might be fair. Less if they had access to plasma swords, gravity hammers, and other sorts of Covenant goodies.

Ehn... I've honestly seen that gamed out a few times. Take the armor from both of 'em and a Space Marine would kick the crap out of a Spartan pretty much repeatedly. Give them the armor and... well, same thing. They operate pretty much in the exact same operational niche, only the Marines are considerably more biologically enhanced (in pretty much every way -- Marines are agile like you wouldn't believe, actually, and tend to have pretty impressive cognitive improvements, as well), honestly better trained, and overall have the better equipment. It's not really a matchup at all.

Spartans are a bit ahead of some of the better Imperial Guard critters (Well, possibly barring the assassins and similar specialists), from what I recall, but they're on average still considerably worse than most Marines. Master Chief or some of the more experienced Spartans might have a better chance of giving a good go of a Spartan vs Marine matchup, but pound for pound the Marine's the better warcritter.

Spartans would have a bit of an advantage on a C&C front if the AI piggybacked along, and possibly even without that, but they're definitely not the better fighter of the comparison... or soldier, really.

That's about the way I see it. And we're just talking basic Marines with boltguns here. If they brought out the elites or some better weaponry, the Spartans would just lose faster.

I think that the only real advantages that I could give to Spartans in that situation would be flat-out movement speed. That, and if each of them had a Smart AI plugged into their systems a la Cortana and Master Chief, as that sort of data-processing and added situational awareness could be very helpful. Basically to take down an Astartes, you'd need at minimum three Spartan-IIs: One on overwatch with their sniper rifle/relaying information to the other two (which, admittedly, is fairly good for non-reactive rounds; if it can punch straight through an Elite's shields and armor and keep going, I think it stands a reasonable chance of penetrating Power Armor), and two to tag-team the Astartes with plasma swords.

Even then, I'd only give them maybe a 33% chance of success, if they had the element of surprise and got the first strike. All it would take for the Astartes to kill any of them would be one or two hits with a bolter, or a single solid hit with any heavy or melee weapon, by my estimation. So if you had the greenest Astartes you could get, with nothing but a chainsword and bolt pistol, matched against a veteran team of Spartan-IIs used to working together, well armed, supported by a trio of Smart AIs, with surprise and pre-established ambush positions... maybe.

So what you're trying to say is, that even the most badass of the badass Spartan-IIs in a tactically perfect situation would still have only a one in three chance of killing a Space Marine newb? Sounds about right. Which kind of sucks for the Spartans, because there's hundreds of thousands of Space Marines. There was, max, seventy-five Spartan-IIs and some 300 Spartan-IIIs.

"Greenest" Astartes is a relative term. Don't forget that they've already spent a few decades running around as scouts, getting used to their implants and weapons, forming partnerships, and basically staring death in the face the entire time.

On that note, a Spartan could probably go one-on-one with a Scout Marine with ease; not nearly as much armor or experience, and their implants haven't had as much time to work.

One last Thing issue for you to contemplate: if it gets hold of just one Space Marine, it could potentially have an army of those; it would know how to recreate gene seeds and such.

Gene seeds don't just sprout into new Marines, you know :|

They have to be carefully cultivated into the various artificial organs before implantation into a strong, suitable candidate. Even then, most candidates die.

I think you are underestimating the speed of the Spartans.  They can dodge bullets at near point blank range. If they got hit they'd probably go down, but from what I've read all Space Marines are are just super juiced people in power armour. Plus battles in different gravity settings could make for a challenge as well if they get to use their armour abilities like invisibility.

A Thing on a Chapter Recruiting World (Read: Hellhole Deathworld of Doom) then, would be incredibly bad news. Entire planet of rapidly mutating, super badass/intelligent superhumans.
