One last Thing issue for you to contemplate: if it gets hold of just one Space Marine, it could potentially have an army of those; it would know how to recreate gene seeds and such.
Gene seeds don't just sprout into new Marines, you know :|

They have to be carefully cultivated into the various artificial organs before implantation into a strong, suitable candidate. Even then, most candidates die.

A Thing on a Chapter Recruiting World (Read: Hellhole Deathworld of Doom) then, would be incredibly bad news. Entire planet of rapidly mutating, super badass/intelligent superhumans.
I shudder to think of it, though in terror or glee is not certain.

Alien vs. The Three Stooges.

... I just had an entire Robot Chicken style skit play out in my head where the Three Stooges fought an Alien, and all died except for the 'leader' guy. Who then got Facehugged for TEH CLIMACTIC ENDING.

That would indeed be bad. The whole recruiting Chapter and planet might get wiped out by the Inquisition in a situation like that, either because they were infested or simply because they might be.

And then they'd have to deal with whatever got off planet as well, and the escapees would be virtually impossible to find.

A lot of recruiting is done on primitive and dangerous worlds, with no spaceflight other than what the Marines provide. Not saying it's impossible, but this situation could potentially be contained with only one planet destroyed.

Yep. Still, if one escaped, the universe would be just a little more grimdark.

Nothing an Inquisitorial Task Force couldn't fix (after potentially billions of deaths, of course...)

Pyramid break!
Seriously, picture the consequences of the Thing actually gaining a powerbase in the galaxy. Each faction would probably be infiltrated, and no one would be able to trust anyone, for they may not be who they say they are. Worlds are lost daily, and when it gets ahold of pskers it gets even worse.
In other words, a normal day in 40k!

Aannnddd then the Thing gets possessed by a daemon and the real fun begins!

I think the real question would be if the Thing would end up committed to one of the factions or end up as an avatar of Chaos Unbound. I'd personally figure on the latter, m'self, given enough time. Thing seems fun, but it also sounds like it wouldn't really have much in the way of defense against Chaos corruption, heh.

I think that we can mostly agree that whatever goes into WH40K doesn't come out.
Does Brighthammer count, or is that just putting the universe inside itself?

Brighthammer isn't the 40K we know, though.

Speaking of the Thing, what about putting it into the Star Trek galaxy? It's already about exploration, understanding, and assimilation, so a not-so-hostile takeover of the Federation seems like a likely first step. Which would then lead to a Thing v. Borg showdown at some point. Could the Thing assimilate Borg as anything but additional biomass?

More widely, should we think about the specifics of two assimilation-oriented hiveminds fighting each other more closely? Would it ever be a matter of actual assimilation, mind and all, rather than just more biomass to work with?

Okay, wait. Technically not a crossover, but it draws from fanon.

What would happen if you pitted Eldrad against Kharne?
