Things you learned today thread
« on: January 15, 2013, 10:14:10 am »

Today, I learned the most whopcacker term "whopcacker", meaning excellent or fantastic.

I also learned several words in Swedish, but these were far more basic, such as "lära," "lyssna," and "flicka". And a few in Portuguese.

@Footjob, you can microwave most grains I've tried pretty easily through the microwave, even if they aren't packaged for it.

I learned several words in Japanese today, but that's every day.

I don't generally learn new words in English daily anymore (:[) but I learned asseverate a few days back, which is basically yet another synonym for affirm. I also came across recrudescence, and while I already knew the term, it was probably only the second or third time I'd ever seen it used. That means resurrection.

Most of the English words I end up learning these days are jargon though. There is so much jargon...

Not today, but Charles Dickens taught me a new word through the mouth of Bitzer. (Not a trivial task, I might add.)

"Graminivorous."

It increases such categories as "total vocabulary," "diets," and "words Chrome doesn't think exist" by one apiece.

I learned that the visa gift cards the college bookstore puts the money on when you sell a used book back to them can not be used at gas stations.

I also learned that the needle can go a little past the E mark on a gas gauge without quite running out of gas.

I learned about how to set up a honeypot and how the FBI uses them to catch various kinds of criminals on the internet. I also learned a lot of things about Autism from a roommate of mine who has a lot of experience dealing with Autistic individuals, and in turn have learned how to better deal with some aspects of my Asperger's.

Furthermore I learned that people are more open to the concept of role-playing and role-playing games if you explain to them that Dungeons and Dragons is very similar to acting in some kind of an improv group on Broadway and thus might be able to talk to more people about my nerdy interests and such. This makes me happy, as I have been wanting to socialize more with people outside of the internet.

...I also learned that I tend to get along best with people who are good listeners and that unfortunately I know perhaps two or three people who are such a thing. Oh well, I hope to find many more people who can listen eventually.

I was known as dei before. Chances are that isn't a good thing.

Just as a warning, I have Asperger's Syndrome and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Between the lack of a sense of humor, the eccentricities, bizarre obsessions and the swiss cheese-like memory, talking to me should be interesting.
