Boring,
« on: January 15, 2013, 04:31:54 am »

Adventure Mode is kind of boring now, all you do is talk to someone, get quest, kill, get back, woah, that's alot of fun. Other than that all you can do is really be a necromancer which is also boring as hell.

And don't forget the boring 'training' you have to go through before you can do that. I'm sure toady will make it more exciting in the future.

Normally I just go around Adventure Mode and all of a sudden I'm chased by wolves, or when I go to night I get attacked by bogeymen, it is all getting repetitive, where is the fun in such a linear game?
Much like Fortress mode or... You know what? I'm even going to bring up the comparison of writing - do something different. Impose a restriction on yourself, create a narrative, do something out of the box. Eventually it starts to write itself.

I think if this is a recurring issue adventure mode is not for you.

I don't understand how you can enjoy dwarf fortress at all since you apparently expect to be railroaded to fun.

I usually narrate everything what I do in my head, it may seem weird but it's a hell of a lot more awesome that way. The motivation to keep playing knowing you will lose to fun is to see how far you can get, using previous mistakes as a lesson. Other than that, Dwarf Fortress shines most when you set challenges. Sure, anyone can embark on a Flux Stone, Clay, Deep Soil, Shallow metals, Deep metals embark with thick vegetation and dense forest in a warm climate. But try to play on wasteland with scarce wood for example. It'll change the way you play the game.

Dwarf Fortress is a game, but also a mental medicine.

What he said is still relevant. You can follow the "story" in adventure mode, such as it is, but as you pointed out there's really not much going on there. DF is a game that encourages you to make goals for yourself, not to stick to some set path. If you want a game with a clear progression from start to end, easily defined challenges, or any semblance of authored narrative, you're going to be disappointed. Travel to distant lands, invent new fighting styles, cave in people's skulls with obscure Misc. Objects. It's really up to you.

Well if COD players all have ADHD, and Minecrafters autism, then what do DF players all have?

Set up challenges like: assassinating a royal with out getting caught, ride around on a minecart, run folks over on the minecart. kite a megabeast into a town and watch the blood shed.
Send companions to their death to please a Hill titan. Become a necro-vampire then take over a dwarf fort as a ruler of an undead army.

Correct, I derailed a bit, sorry for that.
But the same applies to adventurer mode as well; usually I play as human outsider and drop my weapon

I believe Toady is working on more quests and sites in the next version. So you can actually go to elven or dwarven civs.

And, perhaps more relevant to the "entertainment" aspect, you will be able to invade goblin dark fortresses, which should be quite challenging...

As for ideas about making the current adventure mode more interesting, at one point I was planning to make a bunch of evil adventurers and/or forts, and then retire these around the map as targets for future adventuring.  I decided to postpone this project until after the next update, as it will make adventure mode exponentially more awesome.  If something like this interests you, I could send you what I have so far (which isn't much).  I think there also may be a couple of people who have made worlds with forts designed to be visited by adventurers, but I can't remember the threads.

They probably drink it, too. Adventurers are like that.

Ideally Adventurer Mode is to be played in tandem with Fortress Mode. Should be very interesting in the next release, with retiring and the like.

It'd probably be better if megabeasts bred more often and had larger populations, there were more infants of species, and so on. Also, if you could cancel quests (for example, because they're impossible to complete.)

It's a bit of a leap saying he wants to be railroaded to fun. Adventure mode IS repetitive right now, yes it is incomplete, but it's still true. Saying otherwise would be a lie. You have to find your own way to spice it up for now.

Genning a hostile world with a lot of titans and mega beasts can be fun. Sometimes you have to try and change some things to still give the other races a chance to expand though. Playing a different race differently, or modding a race can be a nice change of pace.
