Solution: locate Ro2Client.exe in your steam folder and launch it. Works for me without even launching steam

I've tried that, but what do I actually enter into the Account Login screen?  I set up about 3 different accounts and I don't know whether to put in an Email Address, Account name etc.  Plus, it breaks if I try it more than twice so it's pretty damn tedious trying to narrow down which one it is.

go to https://www.warpportal.com/account/login.aspx, login/create acc, After you login, check http://www.warpportal.com/games/gamelist.aspx, on Ragnarok 2, click "create account" and proceed with creating it. After that, you have to use your RO2 acc to login. Try another browser if you can't see fields labeled as "email" etc. Hope that helps

I tried it and it reminded me on what I hate in modern MMO.

The game literally puts the player in a set path. In RO1 you can skip the tutorial and jump in to the world with nothing but a knife. Go anywhere you can literally go and not die. Jump into random portals. Explore.

Skill limitations. You can't even give out buffs to random people anymore! What's the point of being a priest if I can't give buffs to those having trouble. The wizards firebolt is just one bolt! No more multiple bolts and increased cast time per bolt.

No sniping for you. You can't shoot things if they can't get to you. That was the FUN of being an archer.

Enemy HP bars. Never liked them and never will.

Exactly my thoughts, but in better words than I would have done.

RO2 feels like a cheap F2P WoWish clone with only 1 race, thus 1 starting area, but with ROish classes and monsters. It lost most of the charm of the first game, even through I could not say what even made the charm of that one.

I think the stats mechanic is what bothers me the most. In RO, you could try different skills/stats builds that could either work very well or not at all, depending on how you played, who you played with and what you fought. In RO2, it feels like stats only affect the amount of potions you'll be drinking and which abilities you'll be spamming, but without really affecting what you do and where you go (that is... forward since that's the only direction as pointed out).

I haven't played all that much, so my impressions might be somewhat off, but the thing is... I don't really want to play more. First impressions matter more than actual facts.

While I disagree with the HP bars (picky picky), I definitely follow the issues with the rest. Are MMOs of all things really getting linear? I haven't run into any doing that but man I hope not.

I was about to try this game but from what I've read, it's pretty bad, not original at all (same tired mmo formula), you're doing the same thing from lvl1 to cap level, and it's Pay2Win (apparently the game was even modified from the korean version to force players to rely more heavily on the cash shop). Would anyone here be able to confirm or infirm this ?

I would say this game is a lot less pay2win than the average MMO. The only things worth buying from a gameplay standpoint is the VIP membership which gives stat bonuses. It's a fairly significant buff, but it's not probably not going to be what makes you win a battle. There aren't any purchasable gears though, just cosmetics and utility stuff like stat/skill resets.

Still, the game really is a poor WoW-clone. The only reason worth playing it is as an excuse to hook up with old friends. Coincidentally, I actually stumbled across two people I used to play RO1 with years ago in-game which is a pretty neat surprise.

This COULD be a fun game but my nostalgia glasses is too strong for me to enjoy this. Ragnarok Online is my first MMO and honestly, I hold it to a high standard and that standard isn't even that high.

Visually speaking, I find its lost a lot of its charm (compared to RO). Also really doesn't help my opinion of it that I can't even seem to create an account, much less log in...

Without withdrawing what I've said previously, I can't honestly say it's a bad game. No more so than WoW is a bad game, "objectively" speaking (whatever that really means in such cases). It has nothing terribly wrong, except if it travels the P2W road, but so far I think the only major issue in that regard is due to the resurrection cool down which is 50 minutes, 30 if fully levelled... when you can buy items to do the same. That's supposed to be changed from what I've read. For what it is (another WoWish clone), it's really not bad and in fact better than many other WoW-cloning attempts.

I can't get hooked mostly because I never was a fan of the mindless stand-there-and-spam-skills combat typically found in that kind of game. I like to play during the combat, rather than just mashing the same few hotkeys every seconds. I was spoiled by other MMO in that. The first RO required much more positioning, even if you were still spamming the same few skills; FFXI required (at least the jobs I used to play) to move around, to keep an eye for stuff happening, to react quickly to said stuff; and then there's Mabinogi, which is my new standard for MMO combat... which means I'm unlikely to really enjoy another MMO.

Funny thing is, a few years ago a prototypeish version of RO2 was leaked and private servers popped up. It was absolutely nothing like the current RO2 in terms of gameplay, classes, world map... well everything really. I actually liked that piece of broken unstable software more than the one now available.

Yeah, it definitely takes a certain mindset to enjoy RO combat, and to be fair a lot of later MvPs had a sort've dodging element to them, where if yo ustood in a specific area it wouldn't hit you with X skill, so there was a bit of meat to it but it was mostly stacked in the late game, after you'd already grinded for 300+ hours.

This is now the RO thread.

(also if you're looking for more action-esque MMO combat SMT online isn't too bad. It's no mabi, especially since the combat revamp but it holds its own pretty well)

I knew this would happen... nostalgia is a devilish thing. I decided to check if the RO server I used to play still exist. It does and the last announcement/event was a week ago.

So... currently installing :-\
Edit: Also managed to find my old username and password. My characters are still there too... all 7 of them (altitis is even worse than nostalgia).

I'm rather disappointed with this Ragnarok Online 2. It's not bad persay, but (obviously) it's doomed to being compared to the original. RO1 was a one of a kind game, with a really nice blend of 2D art and 3D maps, great design and detail overall, extremely memorable towns and songs... Plus like it was mentioned here earlier, you could go straight to exploring the entire world with just your starter knife. Not that that'd get you much benefit, but you were free to explore the massive open world fields however you wanted.

Combat also seemed pretty innovative for a grinding RPG. It had a lot of utility skills rather than just attacks (especially classes like Rogues, but even Swordsmen had good variety besides typical attacks). I especially loved mages. They weren't just long range glass cannons, they had tons of utility like fire/ice walls, AoE attacks, freezing, fire traps, slow down mobs, energy coat, etc...

But then I went on RO2, and the graphics are just... Like any typical anime MMO. The porings just look like your typical MMO slime, the starting area is kinda dull... Mages (and classes in general) don't even get half of what they used to have (and we only have less than half of the classes RO1 had). As a mage, like also mentioned here earlier, I'm just spamming single bolts of magic, and am useless without MP pots. Sure, there's fire wall later on, but even the first job mage had more than twice the skills than in RO2, and had more than just pure offense/buff magic.

It just lacks so much charm... It turned into a basic MMO. Nothing is very memorable, and it's extremely linear, plus there's so much less content to play around with. Really, they should have just expanded on the amazing game they had before, just revamp the gameplay and content. Ragnarok without the well-designed 2D sprites in the detailed 3D worlds, without Prontera, Payon, Alberta... It's just not the same at all.

It's really something bad when an old MMO like RO1 can bring so many people such great nostalgia, then you bring a sequel with a completely different style to the point it's only the sequel by name, and perhaps porings and a few other 'cameos.' Even now, I still occasionally like to listen to songs from RO1's soundtrack, and recall so many nice memories. Nonetheless, I might still play it more if I can get my friend to, just because it's Ragnarok, and I'm hoping gameplay and freedom picks up at least slightly more later on.

I liked the first game, sure it was simple 2D graphics but that what was part of why I liked it.
Now this.. sequel is in 3D, I am not sure what to think of that.
Tough it seem to retain that certain artstyle which I liked about the first game.

Sorry to necro this one, but I'm still on the lookout for an online game I can play with my mother, who is a severely casual gamer who doesn't like fighting. We had a great time with Glitch before it went down, but we haven't found anything else that works since then. I see that you can be various types of craftsmen in this game - is it possible to progress without a lot of combat? Or is the crafting just sort of a side thing?
