Corporate Profits Have Grown By 171 Percent Under Obama -- Highest Rate Since 1900

Corporate profits as portion of economy at all-time high.  Workers wages by the same measure at an all-time low.

GOP considering laws that make it easier for them to win despite loosing the popular vote. They plan to reallocate electoral votes by congressional district in critical states where they have a gerrymander.

There was an interesting bit on NPR the other day that mentioned that gerrymandering may not be as big of a deal, because populations are increasingly self-segregating based on political orientation. In other words, there's not just red states and blue states, but red counties and blue counties, even red neighborhoods and blue neighborhoods. In the 2012 election, it was something like 60% of all counties in the US went for one candidate or the other by 20 percentage points or more. Even in many states that went for Obama, you had massive numbers of rural counties going strongly for Romney, and offset only by the urban centers going strongly the other way.

That only makes it easier to gerrymander.

I think the point is that if a district becomes that overwhelmingly monolithic in political orientation, it's not really changing anything to draw the district lines to match. You're putting constituents of a similar mindset and similar demands together under the same representative.

Does that encourage extremism instead of moderation? Yes.
Does it unfairly tip the electoral balance? Not really, if the electorate is as divided as the numbers would indicate.

No. What it means is that you can draw one district that is 90% democratic at the heart of a city and then radiate out from there districts that are 55% republican so that a state that might got 55% democrat/45% republican will put 1 electoral vote to the democrats and 6 for the republicans.

I don't really blame Obama for that mind you. It was a long trend that is happening even in countries without Obama.

It is what I think really sucks about being President.

You can be a terrible president but so long as you were one when the country is exiting a depression... you will be considered glorious

Unless Obama did something I am unaware of in terms of the above.

Well, someone posted this in some dark and forsaken corner of the internet, so I thought I'd bring it into the light, as it's relevant to the topic at hand.

The trick is that they don't draw the district lines to match.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Chris Christie is pretty much burning any bridges he had to being the 2016 GOP nominee.

Quote
(CNN) – Republican Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey skewered the National Rifle Association Thursday for referencing the president's children in a political attack commercial.

Speaking in a press conference, the outspoken governor decried the move as "reprehensible" and argued the group lost some credibility by making the ad.

"And I think for any of us who are public figures, you see that kind of ad and you cringe. You cringe because it's just not appropriate in my view to do that," he said. "They've got real issues to debate on this topic. Get to the real issues. Don't be dragging peoples' children into this. It's wrong."

Christie is a pretty cool guy, eh slaps Republicans and doesnt afraid of anything

Which is ironic because apparently the reps (and Jon Stewart, to a lesser extent) have been bashing on Obama for precisely the same reason.

Actually that is an entirely wrong usage of the word "ironic".
