The thing is, though, Christie won't get the nomination. Barring mass gerrymandering fraud, a socialist as the Democrat nominee, or the Democrats doing something really stupid, 2016 is a lock. The problem with 2012 wasn't really demographics, although that was part of it. It was the Republican base. The primary system means that it's now impossible to win the Republican nomination if you have any real centrist cred. But if you don't have any centrist cred, you can't win the general.

Also, the House GOP have finally seen the light of day. For now.

Finally got around to watching that Daily Show bit about the restrictions on ATF....Jesus fucking Christ, THANK YOU. I've been railing about that sort of thing for years now (though even the "please think about maybe not selling weapons to people under the influence of drugs" things was news to me...I never deal with the external-facing website)

This one? God, it's worse than I thought. And I thought it was pretty bad.

Oh wasn't this mentioned earlier in the thread? And wasn't it only there specifically to fight the evil gays.

EDIT: here we go

The House GOP has graciously reversed its position and allowed a budgetary increase. Why? Why, to protect us from teh gayz, of course!

Ah... if you'd actually read the articles, I think you'd find them to be talking about rather different things :P

I'm really glad the GOP did what it did. It's like they suddenly remembered they could aslo acts like adults. Now, I hope the Senate will get his shit together and accept the deal and write a budget.

The Senate has its shit together most of the time. The members are all very experienced and their seniority gives them a higher number of pre-Reganite and pre-Tea Party Republicans. Both of these factors mean that the Senate actually knows how to into bipartisanship when something needs doing.

Generally, it is only the House that is prone to the kind of annoying immaturity we've seen recently.

Which is why it's really cool to see the House GOP act responsably for once.

They aren't so much acting responsibly as they are reacting to suddenly realizing the national spotlight is upon their obstructionism like a bully does when he realizes the teacher sees him trying to beat up his classmates: Acting like they're all on board and that they were never doing anything wrong in the first place, and that if anyone was it was Obama.

Paul Ryan's back on the abortion circuit.

It'll blow up in his face if he runs in 2016.

I dunno, abortion is a huge can of worms, and I don't think it's really at all like gay marriage; there are no good, consistent reasons to oppose gay marriage, but there are consistent (whether or not they're good I shall leave as an exercise to the reader) reasons to oppose abortion. And unlike gay marriage, where people generally only change their position once (to support gay marriage), people's take on abortion changes both ways. (I think this is because gay marriage doesn't trigger any zero-sum thinking; allowing gays to marry doesn't detract from heterosexual couples and does all the world for gay ones. But abortion does: on one side, the opposition is going to kill children; on the other, the opposition wants to take away women's right to choose. As well, abortion is more personal; people will change their position on gay marriage because they know gays, but they'll change their position on abortion because they know someone who was raped, or had a fetus with a horrible defect, or had an abortion that was really traumatizing, etc.)

Then, too, I think pro-lifers would get a lot more respect if they opposed abortion because they were in fact pro-life, and were also anti-war, pro-education, pro-adoption, pro-healthcare, anti-capital punishment, etc. But they're not, so it's obvious they're opposed to it because they're misogynistic fuckwits.
