Okay. Here we go.

This is the northwest of France and the southeast of England. The thick black lines in England denote group boundaries; the one facing off against me is 11 Group. In the far west of 11 Group's area of responsibility is the Supermarine factory at Woolston (the blue dots in the corner of Sector A).

The yellow dots are radar stations: Chain Home, the A-shaped icons, and Chain Home Low, the ones with the things on top. Here's a map of the coverage. If I knock out the radar stations, they'll be replaced by mobile units with significantly shorter coverage ranges.

The green dots are airfields. The vast collection of them on that bend in the French coast house Luftflotte 2, based around Calais. Further south, the airfields in Normandy house Luftflotte 3.

The RAF is currently a stronger fighter force than the Luftwaffe; our commitment hasn't started in earnest yet, and I don't have the forces to be all that tricky.

The RAF organizes itself by squadron, while the Luftwaffe's unit-on-the-map is the Gruppe (group). It normally comes to three or four Staffeln (squadrons) of ten or twelve aircraft each. I have ten or twelve squadrons of fighters (counting the Me 110s as fighters is maybe a bit charitable, but I'm in a good mood), plus about 375 level bombers of various types and 100 Stukas.

Like I said, that isn't enough for serious misdirection yet, so for the morning phase, I'm just going to hit a convoy.

Stukas, as precision-attack aircraft, are well-suited to the task of bombing cargo ships. I order up two Staffeln each of Stukas and Bf 109s, and the raid marker appears on the map.

One Staffel of Bf 109s (from II./JG 51 [you know, see the bottom of this update for the German organization tutorial]) has Free Escort orders, which is to say that they're supposed to be well above the bombers, ready to pounce on any attackers, while the other is to fly attached (read: closer) escort.

None of that goes to plan. II./JG 51 hits its rendezvous point well before the Stukas are there, and proceeds on ahead to the target area, where it runs into a patrolling squadron of Hurricanes. I hop into a 109.

Apparently, I'm able to leverage the 109's performance edge sufficiently to be obviously superior to Hurricanes.

Climb and acceleration are my major advantages, and two of the Hurricane's weaknesses. I slice through the dogfight a couple of times, taking shots where the opportunity presents itself. One pass nets me a lucky cockpit shot from long range with my machine guns, and that Hurricane plunges into the sea.

I find myself on the tail of another, who had been hassling another 109 just before. He pulls up, which is the wrong way to escape from me. A long burst into his tail sees him into the Channel, too.

After that, though, I find myself low on cannon ammunition and down to a half-tank of gas. More worryingly, I see a ton of Hurricanes and now a few Spitfires, compared to only a small handful of fellow 109s. I turn due east, skirting the cloud base, and return to France. I crash on landing, which was a common issue with the 109 (something I might want to practice).

The close escorts also fail to rendezvous with the bombers, probably owing to the long trip the bombers had from Luftflotte 3 territory and possibly some ineptitude on my part. The close escorts do engage an RAF squadron, however, shooting down a few of them against two losses. The Stukas fail to find the main body of the convoy, and claim two ships damaged. Two of the Stukas were damaged, but none were destroyed.

The 109s fared less well. II./JG 51 lost eight aircraft of the twelve that flew, an unfortunate tally. Altogether, the two Staffeln of Bf 109s claimed 14 aircraft against nine losses; the over-claiming effect leads me to suspect something like a 1-1 loss ratio.

That wouldn't be bad, if I were hitting valuable strategic targets, but for a battle over the Channel, it's not the kind of result I wanted.

Fishbreath's personal kill tally: 2.

---

Luftwaffe organization:

Jagdgeschwader/Kampfgeschwader/Sturmgeschwader (fighters/bombers/dive bombers): 100-120 aircraft, 3-4 Gruppen. Arabic numeral (e.g. JG 51)

Gruppe: 30-40 aircraft, Roman numeral (e.g. II./JG 51)

Staffel: 9-12 aircraft, Arabic numeral again (e.g. 4./JG 51, 5./JG 51, and 6./JG 51 would be II./JG 51's Staffeln).

I kind of figured, by analogy from hellblau, but I'm not enough of a German speaker to care that much.

Quote from: The Onion
MUNICH—An elite force of three dozen 24-hour Luftwaffle restaurants were unveiled across Germany Monday, with free waffles for blond-haired, blue-eyed customers, discounts on Cheese SwasSticks, and the incendiary bombardment of Luftwaffle's largest competitor, the city of London. "Soon, customers will fall under the sway of my lightning-quick, piping-hot Blintzkreig," said Hans Kreuzen, Luftwaffle's founder and oberstmanager-general. "All will know the sweet, buttery taste of fear and waffles from above." Luftwaffle restaurants are expected to face ruthless competition in Germany's already crowded martial-themed eatery business, which is led by such established chains as WehrKnochwurst and Der Marzipanzerkommand.

If I win this campaign (it ends on September 15th, one week into the Blitz and on the day that the Luftwaffe historically suffered such heavy losses over London that it switched to night bombing), the game will probably claim that I've paved the way for Operation Sea Lion, the planned invasion of Britain. Fortunately for the world, it almost certainly would have failed. The Germans were correct that air power was more than capable of sinking warships, but they were critically wrong in that they seemed to believe German air power could sink warships, when recent history had already shown otherwise. Novelist and military historian Len Deighton remarked that Sea Lion would have been a "Dunkirk in reverse". The image of frantically landing troops by way of whatever seaworthy vessels are at hand onto an untenable shoreline is, you'll agree, maybe a little absurd. A successful German Battle of Britain would have bought Germany air superiority over Britain, but I'm not sure what Germany would have done with it (except maybe lose the war a little earlier).

Actually, that last parenthetical is a good justification for playing to win. I, the cunning fifth columnist, will entrap ten German divisions and countless tons of supplies in England, eliminated six months before the Führer attacks the Soviets! The war could be over by 1943! Of course, that would require me to be competent, and the second raid of July 10th plus an early morning raid on July 11th suggest I'm, well, not.

On the afternoon of the 10th, I plan a nice, complicated, deceptive raid:

I queue up an He-111 raid on the Rye Chain Home radar station and throw in III./JG 51, that Jagdgeschwader's only unblooded Gruppe, as detached escorts. A Gruppe of Bf 110s take the close escort role.

Cleverly, I order a low-level raid from a Gruppe of Bf 110s on the radar station, set to land 15 minutes after the level bombers do their business. It took me until the next raid to work out why my fighters and bombers weren't properly rendezvousing, so the Bf 109s ended up out ahead again, I had a look back toward the incoming raid:

Hmm. That's more than 30 bombers (the bottom dots). In fact, that looks like sixty. I must have hit the 'up' button on the bomber quantity selection menu by accident, and failed to notice.

That's not really a good thing, because, as the RAF did in reality, my honorable British foes respond proportionally—enough squadrons to tangle with all of my escorts, and a few extras to deal with the bomber Staffeln. Since there are six bomber Staffeln flying today, and since I have two Gruppen of fighters (another six Staffeln), the RAF could well be committing eight or ten squadrons against me, and there are only three Staffeln of fighters with the six Staffeln of basically defenseless bombers.

Well, nothing for it.

In the dogfight, I bag a Spitfire and score some hits on two or three other aircraft, one of which runs off trailing smoke.

The bombers are not faring well.

I can't do much for them right now, though. I'm not yet out of fuel, but I can't find my Staffeln and I don't see any bombers. I turn for France. This time I let the computer land for me.

The Bf 110s strike shortly after the surviving Heinkels turn for home.

It's hard to glean exactly what happened from here. I lost nearly all of the Heinkels—the losses screen claims 48 destroyed and 12 damaged, which seems the natural result of an escort based on an unintentional fighter sweep by the actual capable fighters. On the other hand, my claims suggest I shot down three and a half squadrons' worth of RAF fighters, against losses of 16 Bf 109s. That's not a bad ratio, although the 109s weren't solely responsible for the Luftwaffe's claims today.

Pluses: the radar station is listed as heavily damaged.
Minuses: the Luftwaffe's losses today totaled 100 aircraft, in the main due to my very poor deployments (hopefully to improve in days to come!). For comparison, the worst day the Luftwaffe had historically was 60-some losses.

So far I've hurt the RAF, but I've kind of hurt myself, too, and I'm going to have to be a little less cavalier with losses going forward.

Next morning sees a raid against a convoy. Four squadrons from the RAF come out to play against three Staffeln of Bf 109s. Happily, I lose no 109s, while still managing to shoot down six RAF fighters. Less happily, I score no kills personally.

Fishbreath's personal tally: 3 kills/1 probable

A joystick is practically a necessity, I think. For a tight budget, I'd recommend this. It has a separate throttle and stick, plus a rocker switch you can map to the rudder. I used one for a long time before I caved and bought my fancy CH Products setup, and I didn't have any complaints.

(Caution! Spoilers for the next update behind the link below!)

I may have turned up a bug. I have screenshots taken of the second raid on July 11th (which I'll post about tomorrow), but I'm going to hold off on playing more until I hear something about the bug. Long story short, casualty reports for level bombers seem to be wildly overstated in some places (like the Mission Folder and the end-of-day reports). For instance, I didn't lose 60 He 111s on the big July 10th raid, and I didn't lose (as many bombers as I thought) on the July 12th.

Ordinarily I wouldn't be concerned about what's probably just a delay issue, but I worry that double- or triple-counting my end-of-day losses will have morale effects, and the Luftwaffe's job is already pretty hard.

the joystick thing is less "I can't afford it" and more "Where the fuck do I put it when I'm not playing this one game" but thanks anyhow
