Saving kittens from the bottom of my pit?
« on: January 13, 2013, 02:39:05 pm »

Hi guys. I made a pit around my entrance and poor kittens keep falling from the bridge. Is there a way to save them without having to dig a tunnel from my main ladder hallway? Because doing so would force me to build walls to seal it and if a building destroyer gets into the pit it will find its way to the core of my fortress.

Thanks!

Unless I am wrong, constructed walls cannot be destroyed. So as long as you build walls and not something else, you should be fine.

The easiest way would be to build a 1x1 bridge and then raise it. That way you can lower it when something has fallen in you want to get out. Bridges cannot be destroyed and as long as its raised it cannot be passed over.

Some immediate options:

  • Dig a tunnel, reseal with walls. Building destroys cannot destroy anything built in (b) (c).
  • Leave the kittens there, they won't mind.
  • Build a staircase, pull the kittens up and then destroy the staircase with a cave in.

Why would you want to save them? It's like helping someone who murdered your whole family, but worse.
Okay, nevermind... Covering entrance with a bridge looks like the best way to do it.

EDIT: *facepalm*... I meant: whole. No offence.

If you fill it with magma, maybe they'll float to the top.

If you toss goblins down there, they will become friends and float to the top using the POWER OF FRIENDSHIP!

Man the trolls are real friendly here! :) but yeah, constructed walls can't be broken; Hence why it's possible to have a completely above ground fort; so if you don't want to leave enough time to build an drawbridge (atom smasher bonus if you built it out in the moat.) digging out a long tunnel  and constructing a wall after they're in might be the best bet. Or if you have room you could build an fortification post for marksdwarves to practice at (provided you get marksdwarves that aren't blind to the idea of shooting through fortifications.)
pastures are good at keeping pet cats away from the front of your fortress it you are aiming at vermin control. just pasture them at strategic areas.

That depends on if your dwarves like cats for their aloofness... or their apparently delicious meats and lovely skulls/bones.

A cat-fueled Totem, Food, and possibly Bolt industry can really be a boon to fortresses.

A risky affair. One minute your mayor sits atop a cat bone throne surrounded in a wealth of alcohols, the next; cats, cats everywhere.

You men disgust me.

Obviously these kittens are meant as a spare food supply, that way the Dwarves won't starve during a siege!
