So rather than continue our fairly mature Europa Universalis game that was become less and less fun, we decided to start a new game of Crusader Kings II.

The mod we're using is A New World, Dawn of Empires, which removes all de jure Kingdoms and Empires from the game, and causes everyone to start as a count. The first phase of the game where we play as a barbarian horde to spread our culture and religion is coming to an end, but you can still jump in as an independent count to build your own Kingdom from the ground up.

still want to work out if holding costs are gonna go down or not, save would be nice to continue for a few years and check like that - sadly ten minutes of googling yielded nothing and i cant read the forum post you put up.

Added a save that I had. It might differ by a few days from fivex's, but whatever.

EDIT: As far as I can tell, searching through the thread, holding costs are working as designed, and won't get any lower. It's supposed to be difficult to build up holdings, to prevent AI horde nations from constructing additional holdings, and to prevent civilized nations from building up their holdings too quickly. They didn't want every county to be filled with 7 holdings after a few hundred years.

I hope I'm not trapped behind my newly formed breakoffs.

Many of the breakoffs aren't civilized themselves (which is why they begin to blob up again), so they don't have garrisons. Horse archers are still pretty nasty though, but I didn't have a problem tackling that 5 province guy below me once my 2k man levy filled up. And if not, you can just wait for them to civilize and hit them before their garrisons fill up.

I've not actually played this yet. What's a good nation/county/duchy to start out with?

They all start pretty much even besides the location as far as I can tell.

If I may make a suggestion: Don't start in any of the provinces of the same culture group or perhaps even the same religion as other players. Chances are those provinces used to be part of their empire before it auto-insta collapsed. Thus, they likely have strong claims on it and will want to reclaim them...

Also, if our rulers seem strangely young despite how long the game has gone on... blame Fivex. :P

Actually no, Religion is okay because it can spread by events but if they are in the same culture group then they were definitely conquered, actually even if they aren't in the same culture group a player might still have a claim on them, I have a few on a couple counties that I conquered before the event that spreads your culture could fire.

There's no way we'll be able to conquer all of our horde territory within one ruler's lifetime (even if they are time travellers). If you want to start far from other players, Spain/West Africa, or Eastern Europe/Balkans, are probably the best places, but really the whole map is open at this point.

Spain

 >:(

nearly all of spain is already toulousic/roman, culture and religion-wise, so I'd advise the Balkans.

I don't see why that should be relevant.

We'll see about that. I've only got 70 or so provinces to take and only a few directions to go so I'm expecting massive reconquest in a short amount of time for me.

Though... you have a point. My guy is 36. Still, I'm optimistic.

Edit: Just tested, in the lifetime of two years I took back Scottland and a province of Ireland. Then my ruler died because he got lolmaimed. If I had not been maimed, I would have in all likelyhood overran the isles.

Edit2: Tip for everyone: FORM DUTCHIES DUCHIES AS SOON AS POSSIBLE so you can create vassals. Because if you keep holding all the provinces, and you keep expanding, as you expand you'll get less and less from your provinces until you have in income of 0 as you go more and more over the limit. If you're still a count by then and can't create a dutchy... good luck fighting blindfolded and with one hand tied to your back for the rest of the game unless everyone else is generous or you actually give up land.

Also, well within the lifetime of my second ruler I took all of Ireland. It took 4 years to reclaim half my empire, even without claims half of those 4 years.

No, no, no, only the Netherlands get Dutchies, we, mere mortals, will have to make do with Duchies.  :P

Oh ho ho look at you and your witty text. Let's see how much the AI appreciates your wittiness next session. I expect another instakill.

You all too easily forget that I was left in that situation by the AI that took over while I had DCed. It is not like I got myself besieged and lost to the enemy AI on my own.
