Dumping refuse in lava creates lava mist ?
« on: January 12, 2013, 08:07:13 pm »

Hey everyone,

I have formerly only observed lava or magma mist when a cave-in fell into magma.

It seems my dumping of half of my refuse stockpile (mostly old animal bones) into the volcano's top from 1 z-level high creates a few clouds of lava mist, and I was one tile away from setting on fire three of my dwarves.

Is it new behavior ? More importantly, it seems you can now weaponize magma refuse incinerators...

I'll have to see what items trigger the creation of magma mist.

Edit: Well, I just dropped a whole hydra skeleton in it (courtesy of my tamed hydra who died of infection due to the wounds she sustained in battle with a FB), and it created some. Maybe it's a matter of weight ?

I have already weaponized it. My hallway (or however is called a long, wide corridor) is full of lava tanks with floor hatches above them.
1. Place coins, cats, legendary fishery workers or any other junk you don't need on hatches
2. Wait for gobbos
3. Pull the Lever of Doom
4. Profit.

This makes me wish I could even approach WATER without horrific and embarrassing mistakes being made.  By this point the game just gives me a game over screen when I designate what looks like a shaft to the magma sea and tells me My Strength Was Broken By a Forgone Conclusion

Yeah, I discovered this feature the hard way.  Now I have my disposal chutes 5+ Z levels high, just to be sure there's no chance of lava mist, smoke, or whatever other thing escaping and affecting the dwarves doing the dumping.

It's an extension from when Toady updated the "skid" code. He wanted things that bounced off water to generate mist, so as a result we get mist/lava mist when you drop things into liquids.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

And just double checking, all dumped items make mist when there are enough of them?

I've also weaponised this, but I used minecarts to create a more persistant mist. It's pretty hazardous stuff, but can easily repel an entire siege.

The weight of the dropped object does seem to be a factor in the size of the cloud, but I haven't done any rigorous testing to confirm the parameters of this.

One of my favorite things to do is set up an abbatoir by the first magma pipe I find made of craftsdwarf, tannery, leatherworks, and kitchen shops with a big refuse stockpile, and have the unusable body parts dumped into the lava by minecart. After sieges I get to watch troll skeletons splashing into magma. :)

The main problem with it is dwarves hike clear up to the surface to drag corpses down 40 or so z-levels which takes a while, but it's pretty necessary because necromancers exist.

That magma mist gate is pretty cool.
