Eclipse Phase: A Cyberpunk-Horror Roleplaying Game
« on: January 12, 2013, 05:01:04 pm »

Eclipse Phase is a cyberpunk roleplaying game with elements or horror, its a world where humanity has reached the point of transhumanism, what is in essence immortality is common place and mankind no longer exist as it once did. Spread throughout the solar system in cities, new born colonies and the like they have been pushed from Earth by man made AIs known as TITANs.

To describe it in the words of those who made the game "Eclipse Phase is a post-apocalyptic roleplaying game of transhuman conspiracy and horror. Humans are enhanced and improved, but humanity is battered and bitterly divided. Technology allows the reshaping of bodies and minds and liberates us from material needs, but also creates opportunities for oppression and puts the capability for mass destruction in the hands of everyone. Many threats lurk in the devastated habitats of the Fall, dangers both familiar and alien."

The players are one of those Trans-humans who survived the Fall, an event caused by the TITANs that led to the fall of Earth and Trans-humanity's flight to the space beyond their home world. You can be anything from an operative of the organization Firewall to a mercenary selling his skills for anyone who will take it to a simple civilian who has decided to go out and seek his fortune past the Pandora gates as a Gatecrasher or colonist. The game provides an immense number of options for character creation beside the basics stats and skills, each character gets to choose a morph which is basically a body for your mind to inhabit, they vary from what is like a normal human to upraised apes and far far more.

The game is entirely free (though you can support the creators by buying real copies of their rulebooks) and all of the rulebooks, expansions, etc. can be found here -> http://robboyle.wordpress.com/eclipse-phase-pdfs/

I'm not the best at describing things so I'll let you guys get the rest of your impression about the game from the pdfs themselves, all I can really say is that the game is quite amazing just from reading part of the core rulebook and the expansions. If anyone is interested I figured we could get a few people to DM games, I myself would love to run a few sessions over IRC for all people interested.

It sounds interesting. Right now I'm reading through the core rulebook, but I would also be interested in playing.

There are a couple of other people I've managed to get interested over IRC, and the steam DFC chat so for those interested in playing in my sessions PM me a sheet on the forums and I'll get to work on some stuff. If we do get things going I'll do games when I have time to spare and everyone that is on and also has time will be able to jump in. The basis of the 'campaign' ( use this term loosely) will be that you guys are a group of mercenaries that sell their talent to anyone who will pay, this way I can numerous shorter story-lines and hopefully it'll be more fun in the end.

Also, can you give me a page number for the character sheet or something? I'd like to fill it out sometime soon, as I'm still reading through the rule book.
Nevermind. I must have forgotten that informative books generally have a table of contents. *facepalm*
It would help if you could somehow link or condense it in the OP.

PTW, this thread has prompted me to finally get around to buying a physical copy of the rules. I'm very interested in participating.

Also, if anyone is looking for a decent primer for this sort of theme I'd suggest Accelerando. Or frankly, most anything by Charles Stross.

Holy shit you can play as a psychic ninja cyborg octopus hacker. This is like Shadowrun mixed with Call Of Cthulhu, then a teeny bit of Warhammer 40k and Paranoia sprinkled on, then drenching it in liquid awesome.
EDIT: Make that an alcoholic psychic ninja cyborg octopus hacker.

Just curious, how are you guys playing DM games online?  Do you just use chat?  Also, logistics like dice, how is this done?  How are these games kept organized online?

Is there any point to being anything that ISN'T an octopus? I mean, seriously. Eight weapons. Fit into teeny spaces. Blinding attack and camo.

Postal: It's over chat, IIRC. That's what adwarf's been saying in #bay12lb channel on the Darkmyst server. And Darkmyst has built-in dicerolling 'n such.

What's the consensus on the way implants and cybernetics effect the aptitude caps? Do they provide higher than a morph's potential maximum, or do you still need the exceptional aptitude trait? They're still constrained by the hard cap (40), right?

Example: An ego with 25 REF is slotted into a ghost morph, which provides a further +5 REF making 30 REF, the morph's attribute cap. The morph is outfitted with Reflex Boosters, which provide a further +10 REF bringing it up to a total 40 REF. However a ghost morph comes with Adrenal Boost for free, which can provide a further +10 REF in select situations. This is wasted due to the fact that the hard cap has already been reached (although the 'ignore 1 wound' effect still applies).

Is this correct?
