Marvel Heroes - A F2P Action RPG
« on: January 11, 2013, 08:02:56 pm »

So there is a new Marvel Heroes ARPG in beta right now. It's somewhat light on content(not sure if it will have more at launch) but fun. 4 initial heroes to choose from if you are F2P and you can earn all other characters and equipment through play. They say purchases in the cash shop are just for those who don't want to spend time grinding for specific characters or costumes, equip, etc.

Anyone interested?

Seems really interesting, but I wonder how they handle multiple heroes?

Honestly, having 10 Iron Mans fighting one oponent would be very silly, even if they did look different due to skins :S

Still, free to play, no reason not to give it a whirl :)

Since you were the first to respond, I sent you a beta code. If I get others I will share them here.

PTW.

I was a huge Spiderman and Daredevil fan as a kid. I also liked Wolverine and The Uncanny X-Men (most of the time, although KittyHawk was a real beating at times). I never once read a single Avengers comic, probably because I find Captain America and Hawkeye to be silly. You can blame Bucky for the Captain America hate. As for Hawkeye...I just couldn't accept a guy using a bow & arrow fighting superheroes/villians.

Well that was certainly unexpected, but once again, not really since you are HemmingJay the gifting hero of Bay12!

Thanks a bunch, will report with impressions soonish :)

Edit: Tho I find the limitation of not having numbers in your name a rather silly one too, lots of names will be off limits after a while and you can only have so much good sounding names with just letters to use. So grab 'em while you can  I guess.

Is this actually any good? Having played some of marvel ultimate alliance* and finding it to not be all that great, I have to wonder - this sounds like a similar kind of game.

* not all of it because it was not compelling in any way.

Over 9000 lines of dialogue in this game. Dude trolling?

The trailer looks like almost exactly the same game, with some skins I don't recognize (white-suit spiderman, is that a thing?) and MAYBE some MMORPG elements. Although, I had a bit of fun back in the day with the X-Men games that preceded Marvel Ultimate Alliance so there's a chance it will actually be fun. So, currently skeptical but not totally writing it off.

I also thought it was funny when the trailer featured Rhino under the heading "Battle Iconic Villains". You would have though they'd have come up with...ANY other villain from the Marvel Universe to make that point.

RPS says it's an awful game. Avoid it for the time being.

Quote from: RPS
Marvel Heroes, in its current beta form, is dreadful. Let’s be clear – it’s not finished, there’s no release date yet, and there’s clearly lots of work yet to be done. But they invited the press to have a play of a very limited portion of the game so we could report on it. And it’s currently a giant, dreary mess, a clash of woefully weak combat, and lacklustre delivery, so barren of ideas that I kept wondering if I was doing something wrong. Looking like it was made in 2002 (which is no mean feat with the Unreal Engine), and playing like it was made in 1986, this ARPG MMO feels like one of those ’80s half-arsed movie tie-in arcade games that would be ported clumsily to home computer.

It is almost exactly like Marvel Ultimate Alliance with Diablo input(mouse for movement). It's completely cheesy like an 80's comic book movie, which in my opinion is good. We don't need any more media trying to make superheroes seem realistic right now.

As for RPS' John Walker article, I will just say that he is highly inconsistent in his reviews. In this particular one, I can only try to imagine why he lambasted a media build 5 months before release. Anyway, another reviewer felt the need to set the record straight with an opposing view in the comment section.

Personally, as the game is now I would rate it 6.5/10 but I suspect they will be improving it a little before launch. For a F2P Marvel Alliance ARPG game, I couldn't be much happier.

Beta is beta, and while it sounds fairly rough in it's current form I'm optimistic this will end up being an awesome game.

Thank you for this other point of view, but I'll stay skeptic for the time being. Even this another reviewer says that "combat isn't that bad". Combat should be solid, especially for an ARPG, not just "not that bad". But, well, okay, it's a beta and it's F2P, so it's not like we would "lose" money over it. :D

Is the game Pvp oriented like League or more like a typical MMO?

John Walker is a hack and I'll pretty much do the opposite of whatever he says just on principal alone.

Also if this is indeed like Marvel Ultimate Alliance then it will be great fun.

Well, it has Deadpool, my favorite Marvel anti-hero (more like villain protagonist who sometimes decides to be a hero if it works for him) of all time. If he opposes evil in some way, it's usually not for the sake of doing good and that's the kind of protagonist I like in Marvel. I might play it just for the sake of playing as Deadpool.

BTW, he looks like this
