My first experience with HFS
« on: January 11, 2013, 04:19:14 pm »

Hey guys, im new to the forums. I've been lurking for a LONG time. Decided to start making myself known and whatnot. Ive played Dwarf Fortress for about two years now. Love the game, had really weird moments, all that nonsense. It wasn't until today, that i managed to find, and mine the candy of glorious  proportions. Accidental flooded part of my mines with lava, with few casualties, but I stopped it from being a big problem.

yes, their are spoilers. Wish i knew how to do the spoiler thingy...

Anyway, i start extracting the threads, making wafers, prepare to arm my militia with axes that cut through steel. Before i can get that started though, my metalworker decides to have a mood. He says, ya know what? i want some candy. He grabs a few wafers, and a cut gem, and starts up. Almost a month later, he emerges from the magma forges with Igstun Thun: The Gloss of Dominion. What is Igstun Thun? Why, it's an adamantite shield with craftsdwarfship of the highest quality, encrusted with slate cabochons and encircled with bands of adamantite.

My very first adamantite anything, and its a shield. I feel lucky it wasnt a jug or pot or something else practically worthless, and lucky because I FOUND CANDY.

Anyway, Hi guys!

-Edit-  Looks like he also became a legendary Armorer. Yay me!

LOL, of course not, if you have survived playing DF for 2 years already.

Sadly, my first experience with the HFS involved the now outdated subterene slade cavern of doom with the eerie glowing pits.

Just my luck, it just *HAD* to be tentacle demons too.

Welcome to Bay12, Urist McDruid!

-spoilers follow-

Great that you found candy, it's pretty hard to gather so getting an artifact shield is great work! It's damn useful stuff though, just don't make blunt weapons from it... it's too light for that. Extracting it from the lava can be tricky sometimes though, you've got to chip away at the tiles of candy without flooding your tunnels. Try to aim for the larger deposits.

You are VERY, VERY lucky. The first adamantine artifact was a fucking sock, so consider yourself lucky.

I have since learned that candy grows vertically instead of horizontally like the lesser things. I have quite a bit now, but my fortress seems determined to have a tantrum spiral. Maybe it will fix itself after a while...

Continue the construction of FallenBoulder Tower!

Is the candy vein super thin? If so, be very careful! Save frequently! Backup the saves!

You don't want to circus to come to town in the middle of a tantrum spiral.

Yeah, be careful. Only dig out candy from the larger veins. Bad things happen otherwise.

I can't when everyone is going berserk! or getting struck with melancholy, and doing nothing but running around naked.
