I'm not sure they understand the difference between Java and Javascript. So I'd wager there's nothing to worry about.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

As long as the Perl doesn't start leaking they should have nothing to worry about.

Java has been full of security holes for years. Browse smartly, and you shouldn't have any problems.

First I've heard of it. We haven't disabled Java and we're usually the first to jump on these vulnerabilities. Only thing we've disabled is being able to use the Enter key to submit forms in IE, until MS patches a vulnerability in IE8.

I don't even have Java installed, so at least I'll be fine, I think. Didn't realize people still used Java on the web for front end stuff - I haven't come across any recently.

Yes, this is a thing, and it is being exploited.  Disable Java plugins in your browser.
