Congratulations on creating the single most fantastic headgear the universe has ever seen. I imagine the mere sight of it causes other dwarves to go insane.

So to recap, one minute everything was going just great, and the next we have caverns collapsing, firebreathing cave beasts, underground brush fires, a screaming swarm of poltergheists back for revenge, zombies in the corridors, drunken brawls in the dining halls, magma pouring into the caverns, rotting miasma everywhere, insanity, madness, and a flying crocodile heading right towards us!

For the curious, you can find the full text of my artifact here:  http://pastebin.com/f1scGVfJ

That is just... fantastic.  Well done!  Definitely a first place prize in some category! heheh.

You'd think with that much cloth on it, the turban would be bigger than a dwarf.

A group of dwarves shove the elf into the throne room.
Diplomat: "What is this? I was meant to be led to the mayor!"
Urist: "Aye, 's right there, you tree-hugg-..."
Diplomat: "Oh here come the insults again. And let me guess, I should just stand still next to that pile of cloth while you pull some lever, right? I've heard of you dwarves, I-"
Urist: "How dare ye! 'Tis a turban, not a pile!"
"SILENCE!" said the turban sitting on the throne, "I am the mayor of these grand halls."
Diplomat: "You... the turban is this fortress' mayor?!"
"NO YOU FOOL, I AM WEARING IT!"

How did your dwarf  not starve nor dehydrate for over a decade?

The mayor used to wear the turban.  Now it belongs to the king.

As for not starving, as far as I can tell, if all the materials a dwarf needs are available while in a strange mood, they don't need to eat or drink.

Edit:  Due to a minor error on my part, the king now wears the turban and nothing else.

Never lose that world save. You will have to track that turban through all of history as you progress from fortress to fortress.

That is of course provided your fortress does eventually fall and the turban is taken away by some creature of darkness. Alternatively you could always just go fetch it on adventurer mode and wear it forever as a sign of your might.

Oh god, that would be awesome. The swashbuckling! The mechanisms! The headgear!

....although how would it be possible sans dirigibles?

It still does. I love it, when I get a mason, stone crafter, or miner mooding, I let them go insane on the stone, with fastdwarf turned on until they run out of stone. Finally, freedom from ugly stone! Normally I only let them clear one level per mood.

Your dwarves seem to really like words starting with F and wheels.

Old post, but this must be the most epic artifact I have seen, good stuff. One of the reasons I love Dwarf fortress - it's very unpredictable.

I hope he didnt let the King walk outside while wearing that. One bird dropping could wipe out hundreds of years of history... hehe.
