how about a fortress where each level is shaped like one of the States you're going through and the main production is tailored to the state shape it is? Or would that be too educational?

I was on a 1000 mile nonstop car trip recently. When I wasn't driving I pretty much played crawl and wrote cpp. I guess you are looking for dwarf mode-related suggestions though, based on where this is posted. Driving or being in a car for a long time is so freaking irritating that you may want to try something that turns your brain off a bit rather than a complex technical thing you have to invest a bunch of willpower in to pull off. Maybe build an in-game "happy place", like a decorated room or nature preserve or an ice palace or minecart park. You could make a multi-level dining hall like OcelotTango said, or try new dormitory designs, idk. Try building a world with parameters you've never tried before?

If I have any real suggestion (related to DF), it is to try a new tileset or mod, or try adventuring in 40d (or whenever there was still non-human sites and the old style dungeons) or try a fort in the original 2d version, if you haven't tried those things yet.

How are you managing to power your computer all of that way? You have some sort of cigarette lighter to computer charger adapter or something? I mean sure I play DF, but even with my fairly new computer (battery lasts for like 8 hours when just on the internet) I can only manage to get a couple of hours of DF in before it's out of power.

Probably. I know a few people that permanently have laptop chargers stuck in the lighter socket...  a good example of on here. http://www.targus.com/uk/product_details.asp?sku=APD046EU

But I also know people who refuse to use said devices and instead rely on external batteries instead. or having ridiculous amounts of money and installing the max sized extended battery and picking up a secondary battery designed for one of the expansion slots...
Lets see: extended batteries, spare extended batteries, external batteries, external batteries that can be charged by solar panels...

The OP will hopefully be recharging at hotel rooms or something. I got a stupid ac adapter that goes in the cigarette lighter which charges the laptop for a few seconds at a time, and makes me afraid I'm breaking the whole car battery or alternator or something because cars are not intended to charge laptops.

I'll charge at the hotels of course, but I also have a power strip that plugs into the car outlets and gives me 4 regular outlets.
