The qualifications

Ok, sure, so basically it boils down to "Anybody who thinks they're a pretty nice person" at the moment, but the concept of employing presumably hundreds of people to build this thing is pretty impressive. It really looks like they're serious, which to me is one of the most impressive things about it.

I think that the unspoken question on that sheet is, "If there were four of you and only enough air for three to survive until rescue, would you volunteer?"

That said, it makes some sense; an 8-year training period is a long time, particularly if they have the kind of volunteers they're going to get. And what earthly skills could one have that really would be useful when you're starting a colony? Not basic science or math, you've got computers for that; not engineering, because you aren't making anything there, you're assembling it- not even medicine, since you're thinking about first aid, not surgery or dentistry. You need a guy who'll spend 17 hours a 25-hour day putting up solar panels, then be ready for more of it tomorrow- a skill set that doesn't need top-of-the-line brains, frankly. Well, I guess that geology and atmospherics will be things you'll be more concerned about knowing ahead of time, since they may be similar....

I ramble. To return to the stream, yes, I will sign up, as soon as the option appears. The odds are against me- I'm rather old for this thing, I'd be 33 by the time the launch rolls around, and I don't have bonus skills to go with the extra years. On the other hand, you can't win if you don't play.

I probably won't qualify, but even then I  would't join for ethical reasons. Just don't like the way they handle stuff.

I think I meet the criteria (well, I would think that wouldnt I?) and I would love to go. Alas, I will be in my early 40's by the time they get any crates off the ground, which will probably rule me out.

I would try to go, but once terraforming is a viable technology and it is proven to work.  Once the terraforming starts producing breathable air, I'm going to try to get to mars.

I'm still a little kind of skeptical about that life support system.  Can you really get that much water that way efficiently?  What on earth will they do if something breaks?

Edit:  I get the feeling they might have a better chance if they team up with these guys.

Edit2:  And 33 isn't that old!   >:(  :P

Wow this is way sooner than I thought.

Though the eight year training period is daunting. Considering that's basically all of high school and college for a regular person.

You understand the purpose of actions may not be clear in the moment, but there is good reason—you trust those who guide you.
This is the only thing on the list that does not apply to me. I wouldn't do anything someone tells me to do if I didn't fully understand and endorse the purpose of that action, it's one of my main ethics.

But I wouldn't want to go to Mars anyway. 45 minutes of lag? Hell no.

These guys come up occasionally, but I just don't get it.  They don't seem to have anything more than a nifty website.  How many rockets have they launched?

Technically, I'm too old and stupid.

I'd be nearly 50 by launch. Which I suppose does make me more expendable, but in general I don't have the physical fitness for this.

Reality TV? What the hell, are these guys serious? That show will either be non-interesting or non-ethical.

Chances are 100% 99.9% that you die before that happens. More importantly because it's a generational technology.

Oh, and just a note. The space radiation you will recieve during the flight is likely to give cancers and tumors and whatever after about 20-40 years. Since Mars One is so nice not to provide any protection during the flight, it might be that they choose older people rather than younger. Because they would die before the worst effects show.

Their plan is to lease them, I believe.

Die, really, that's their plan. Hope very very hard that nothing goes wrong, because there's NO BACKUP PLAN. None. As for water recycling, a space ship is a completely closed environement. Filtration can be really efficient.

Reality TV? What the hell, are these guys serious? That show will either be non-interesting or non-ethical.
Isn't that the definition of reality TV.

Yeah, I think the reality TV is supposed to be to provide more funds, but I highly doubt it would.

What they'd need would be the support of several nations and/or large corporations.
Or you know, just let the folks who actually know what they're doing do it. Not to break down those who work at Mars One, but your only solution for most problematic situations appears to be:

To bad, mourn the death and declare bankruptcy.

Indeed. Seems too commercialism centered than actually about science. It would be nice to have humanity's first attempt to set a colony on Mars not end in death and failure. Ah well, maybe enough money thrown at it might be enough.

As it stands, the reality TV show has goods odd of ending up as the record of mankind's first murder on another world.
