Usually I only use magma for forges, but I have made magma death traps before. On my "learn power generation, pump stacks, and construction of ThatAussieGuys magma bunker"map, I drained the entire magma sea into a massive reservoir that the bunker used. All feared my gabbro trade depots, since at the pull of a lever the depot would flood with liquid rock.

I might have to make another one... Lost the save file that one was on  :'(

I think the Triaxx guy said it earlier.

1.Find area to live.

2.Butcher ALL trees.

3.Try not to die while doing the forty buisiness.

We at The Board of Fortresess are hill dwarves mostly, our main enemy is the aquifer.

No I won't remove it via modding that would be too easy.

(when goblins showed up, I mumbled "Smithers! Release the hounds!" and had the lever pulled.)

Should mention, my magma bunker map required quite a bit of terraforming the desert to get past the aquifer in certain places.

Used a massive block of dirt to plug part of it where the pump stack traveled through, the double slit method to get past for the main fort area, and obsidianization to get past it for the obsidian farm / reservoir.

Garbage disposal, invader disposal, elf disposal, ledgendary weaponsmith disposal (damn), obsidian production for 8000 floodgates and 16000 mechanisms, tower casting, burning the entire surface of the embark clean, removing the entire embark's surface soil layer and casting obsidian in it's place to prevent tree growth, magma forges, sterilizing parts of the fortress and caverns, lighting plum helmet men on fire to spread warmth to the caverns, last-ditch fortress flooding...

I build a Great Forge Room with magma smelters, forges, kilns, and glass furnaces down where the magma is, with a floodgate and fortification to control magma flow into the area below the Great Forge Room like this:

http://afteractionreporter.com/2009/03/02/the-complete-and-utter-newby-tutorial-for-dwarf-fortress-part-11-“burning-hot-mag-ma”

I dig out and furnish bedrooms and a dining room for the dwarves that work down there. I designate stone, bar, sand bag, and food stockpiles down there too.

I have to say that as much as I enjoy aquifers and the benefits they provide, I feel no shame in admitting that I've had to use DFHack to punch through them on occasion. Particularly in low wood, shallow soil locations like deserts.

There *are* non-cheater ways to breach aquifers that are pure soil.

One way, is the "nuclear space heater" method. Requires a metal bin full of burning coal, or burning artifact furniture, sitting on a fallaway floor over the top of the channeled out area of the aquifer. Drop the bin or flaming artifact into the water, and the heat generated will vaporize the water as it tries to rush in.  This will produce a considerable amount of steam, and a LOT of water calculations, so FPS will drop precipitously, but if you drop enough of them in strategic locations, you can use them to dry out a section of floor to enable more channeling.

I use it only as a last resort, such as those occasions where I need to get underground because the temperature is scorching.

I admit never having heard of the Nuclear Space Heater Method.

Try the accelerator mod. Is just vainilla with FPS improving changes.

How do you get hold of the burning item in the first place?

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

So it only works on a site with a volcano?

Or a forest fire, or DFHack's liquids commands, or something that spits fire

(Things that spit fire)
Putting [building_destroyer] on fire imps makes them perfect for this, but that's cheating.

One way to potentially move the bin while on fire is to have it loaded in a minecart. This way you can put a non-burning one in, slowly move it through a fire to ignite it, and finally transport it to the desired location for dumping.  Creative unrailing might also work.

Using fire throwing creatures with suitable antagonism is a good potential source.

couldn't you just bring enough* blocks on embark to be able to start off the double slit method?

* enough blocks will most of the time be one block, provided that block is fire-safe. use it to set up a kiln, and use the kiln to gather infinite amounts of clay, which you can then build into walls for your double-slit bypass.
