A Labyrinth Lord Podcast
« on: January 07, 2013, 05:18:16 am »

I wanted to share The Delvers' Podcast with everyone at Bay12. The podcast is focused on actual play using Labyrinth Lord (a B/X D&D retro-clone). My players are my two step-daughters and their mom. I have written about my play experience with them at The Delvers. In short, this is their first time playing tabletop RPGs.

These are edited, so you will NOT be listening to everything at the table. They are 15-20 minutes in length.

I recognize that actual play podcast are very niche, but I feel there is a lot of cross-over with people who enjoy Dwarf Fortress and people who enjoy tabletop role-playing games. So there may be some of you here that would be interested in checking the show out.

We have a promo clip entitled "2000 Coppers," and, although, this is weekly podcast, I posted the first three episodes to get started.
TD001-03 is a one shot dungeon, written by Greg Gillespie called "The Bastion of the Boglings."

TD001 – The Keep
TD002 – Bullywug Lore
TD003 – Weird Death

I am definitely new to podcast creation, so my first mistake was not thinking about turning off the AC during our first session. I was able to eliminate a lot of it in post-production, but, suffice to say, this never happens again in future episodes. To me, there is a vast difference in sound quality from the promo clip (created after several sessions), compared to our first I-have-no-idea-what-I-am-doing session.

As an aside, you'll probably recognize the occasional Dwarf Fortress reference. As an example, the alcohol house rule was inspired by Dwarf Fortress. The specific penalties are the same as not resting and stack with the penalties of not resting. Also, in episode 4, you'll be very familiar with the wine selection. ;]

How much of an improvement is LL to AD&D2E? I've been thinking about getting it, having all the content in one book really sells it for me.

Just as a reference, I did start with B/X D&D when I was younger, so the rules in Labyrinth Lord were already familiar to me. Of course, most of my high school and college years were spent with AD&D 2E. We've only used Labyrinth Lord for a year.

The switch was easy for us. The main differences that stand out in my mind were getting used to rounds being 10 seconds and not 1 minute and the cleric turn table is handle differently (but it's the same concept; a cleric turn is a cleric turn). We do use the Advanced Edition Companion for LL and I prefer using the Advanced HD, since they match AD&D 2E.

That may not sound like much, but with certain things embedded in your mind for so long, some things are hard to shake. Occasionally, I'll adjudicate something based off AD&D 2E rules, but whatever, right? ;]

One thing we don't use from LL is the Character Attack Table. We still use thac0. Obviously, it's the same mechanic, but we prefer the formula, rather than consulting some table.

As for improvement, to me, it's the same game with less rules. Although, I've never used skills, splat books, etc when it came to AD&D 2E. Even so, I find LL is much smoother.

Here is the best part, it's free. You can grab the art free versions pdfs here.

I have purchased the books and bought copies for my players, because I "need" the books on my shelves, but you can try it out with your group at no cost.
