I doubt I'll ever actually buy one of these, but bringing more competition to the market is generally a good thing.  Also, seriously WTF?

Looks extremely compete compared to the rest of the handhelds on the market. The more open nature of Android also bodes well for consumers. Also some decent controls on a handheld, finally. It would be nice to see the specs for use outside of just streaming. Price will also be very important.

I'm cautiously optimistic so far. Still not enough details to go on however.

It actually looks pretty cool.  They must have been working on Sheild for a long while for there to have been absolutely no word until now.  And they had a working demonstration of it, to boot. 

I'mma going to keep an eye on this, just to see how it turns out.

ok the controller base looks horrid, i can feel the cramps already in my hand. There is a small niche market of android handhelds designed for portable console gaming, currently all of them are only single core chips and are only good for subpar emulation. I can see this being massively supported for the individual that likes carrying around his library of n64 or psone games. but seriously, plz use a different design than a fricking controller :/

They HAVE been working on this for some time. It is also one of TWO projects that Steam has been working on with an outside company. It ties into the BIG SCREEN tech that Steam/Valve has been putting forward for a bit.

Now imagine a Onlive-like structure wherein your Steam library is playable entirely through this handheld

Unless they also invented quantum computers, unlikely.

I can play Skyrim through Onlive on my netbook. It doesn't require quantum computing nor will the next partnership.

This actually looks pretty cool. I don't know why it would be uncomfortable to hold, given that it's basically the same shape as an XBOX 360 controller. Those have never bothered me. I'll admit though, before I saw the size comparison I thought it would be the size of an old Xbox controller.

I also like the idea of being able to play it on your TV/using games from your computer. I find a lot of the time there's games on the portable systems where you want to sit down on your own and play for a while on end, and then the tiny portable screen just isn't ideal for that.

So, yeah, "cautiously optimistic" as usual. It looks cool but I can still imagine it sucking in a lot of ways, there's just not much means to tell yet.

Which got quite a bit more than the minimum funding. There was a thread for it somewhere around here but it died. I see a lot of similar wording in the gamestick page that OUYA started with before finalized design.
