Dealing with my OCD
« on: January 06, 2013, 01:15:29 am »

Now I have a problem... My OCD wants everything perfect... And ores and gems do not help at all!

Here is my problem:

Everything is smoothed limestone, except for those couple of blocks. If I smooth them, it will make a different colour in the wall. If I ig it out and build a wall there, it will reveal the blocks behind it. Not OK! Is there any way that I can make this perfect, or do I need to just suck it up and deal with it?

Deal with it, no real way to unmine something.

Well. DFHack has an unreveal command that, well, unreveals tiles you shouldn't be able to see.

So that may work for you.

Hmmm... Might have to go with DFhack...

use dfhack's change vein on the offending blocks.

As far as I know unreveal merely undoes reveals.  Tiletypes might be able to mark an area as unexplored/unrevealed though.  but change vein should work much better for what you want to do.

Nice to know that I am not the only one who dislikes odd colored stones messing up my rooms.

My planned approach, if I ever get a fortress that lasts long enough, is to build a Dwarven GeoFront (i.e. dig out almost every tile I can, & use constructed walls & floors for everywhere but the farms &  tree farm).

revflood

Scans the entire map for areas you have a direct LOS to and unreveals tiles which you can't "see".
So tiles hidden behind constructed walls become invisible.
Great if you want to make secret rooms, or build tidy stone rooms in soil layers.

another option is to cast and smooth obsidian.

Though maybe that's the issue. The concept is just too simple for the dwarven mind to grasp!

Probably the simplest way to deal with it with DFhack is the obsidian (o) and obsidian floor (of) modes in the liquids program, as you can designate a range (like 10x10) to alter over multiple z levels even.  Of course, that makes dark grey walls/floors.

Unless you change obsidian's colour in the raws.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

The insane alternative is to dig out everything and construct all your walls. Like building an aboveground fort but underground. That way, you are guaranteed to get everything looking exactly like you want it. DFhack has a useful command that you can bind to a hotkey: "select this building material when I'm asked what to use when constructing something". Macros then speed up the rest of the designations.

Congrats, Psieye. This is the first time I've seen a derailed thread get put back on the rails.

You obviously never played the 2D version.

Back in those days you couldn't even smooth gem clusters. Same for ore veins. And there were no constructed walls, it all had to be carved from the living rock. Nothing like a big vein of minerals to ruin your bedroom plans. Be glad for what you have now.

One thing I like to do is strip out superfluous mineral clusters (microcline,  koalinite, pyrolusite, cryolite, etc.) and most of the gem types in the raws. This usually makes it so that at least one, if not more, set of layer rock is "clutter free" of gems and oddly colored stone clusters. This makes my bedroom and office design work much easier and less limited, and very, soothingly, uniform.

Alternatively you could dig out a whole new perfect z-level and flood the offending level with magma. That'd show those veins whose in charge!

Easiest way is to throw the obsession to perfection to rubbish bin and to teach yourself not to care.
I used to have it too but I managed to kill that habit.
