Sony PS4 DRM?
« on: January 04, 2013, 06:19:33 pm »

If they do this, I think they have just handed the next generation console battle to Microsoft.

Assuming Microsoft doesn't do something similar that is.

Only if Microsoft doesn't do something equally as horrid.  (does Windows 8 store count?)  I'm sure they aren't thrilled with used games either.

Ohhh, I will hate Microsoft too huh?

Nice to know that in the future gaming will suck as your ability to play games with your friends will be discouraged out of this HUGE fear of "USED GAMES AHHHHHHH!!! If they buy used games that means we won't be able to sell as many games!"

The rule of thumb is that 99.9% of anti-piracy is actually not about Piracy at all... it is anti-resale.

I mean, both companies have been pretty open with their feelings for used games ("It's just as bad as piracy and should be illegal! Killing the industry! rabble rabble rabble!"). So if one of them makes a serious move to curtail consumer rights and quash used game sales the other basically has no reason not to jump in too.

Unless they realise that by not doing so they could potentially get a much greater market share due to a lot of gamers relying on used games to help them afford to play all the games they want. But that would require something akin to logical thought and some sort of a connection with the real world, something which video game companies often seem to lack.

Didn't the EU recently say even online distributors had to provide a way for people to sell used games? I could see this having legal issues in the EU at least.

It isn't illegal if they just make the game incapable of being used on other machines. You can sell it all you want.
