Well its official now, Canonical has announced their intentions to get into the smartphone business taking the fight right to Android and Apple. They will be showing off some phones running the OS at CES this year and probably see some coming out around the 3rd quarter. Whats cool about this is they will be giving us the ability to replace Android on existing phones already, so far they have announced the Galaxy Nexus is compatible. I dunno about you guys but this is fricking big, im already jumping for the fact i can get the ability to turn my phone into a thin pc client, IT department is sure getting a upgrade

Given the Unity design aesthetic, I am completely unsurprised. It's far better suited to smartphones than it is to something with a keyboard and mouse.

Atrix HD (obviously not the developer edition). The latest update also broke the Motofail2go exploit, so I can’t have root either.

e: If you’re thinking of searching for an unlock method, I have already tried that, so, unless your search-fu is stronger than mine, it would probably be a waste of your time.

Meh. Linux phone is fine, I guess. It's for some really specific stuff I generally won't be using my tablet for. I just want to browse B12 and play some games to pass time when I don't have acces to my computer, and android does that just fine.

I am a serious FOSS fanboy, and I will probably never run Windows, but that is unfair. Windows, as much as I don’t care for it, has far more software written for it, and it comes installed on most hardware, so most people, if they even know of an alternative, have no reason to use anything other than the OS that is already installed on their machine, and, even if they did, would not be able to run most of the software that is for sale, and risk finding that some of their hardware is either unsupported or a pain to get working. So it isn’t simple stupidity.

the difference is that you can plug in your phone to a dock (connected to a monitor, keyboard and mouse) and it will turn itself into a small pc thin client, which for me is good for remoting into servers and VPNS (enterprise business stuff).

You know one way or the other, Ubuntu is still the best FREE OS out there, huge hardware support, its literally idiot-proof.

Windows 8 doesn't even look that bad, except for the absence of the start menu. Certainly doesn't look any worse than Unity and it looks a whole heck of a lot like Gnome 3. I probably won't ever use 8, because I don't plan on buying a PC that will need Windows for a few years, but it doesn't really look as bad as people are saying it does. It's certainly not fair to say that people who use Windows are unintelligent or idiots either. Maybe they just like to play PC games?

That said, I'm looking forward to this, because it will be nice to run regular Linux applications on a phone, because my experience with Android apps has been pretty hit or miss. Unity looks like it was made for this too. I wonder if I'll be able to install this on my Android Cowon mp3 player.
