I didn't get to the point with sieges in it.

When I was a newbie, I just made a hole in whatever natural slope existed and rarely bothered with dooring it. Nowadays, I make a tower-like entrance with elevated drawbridges and all.
Aside from that... I still feel like I am a newbie, really. I never got good at militarizing, making big constructions or anything...

I had just finished reading Boatmurdered, so I tried digging sideways into the mountain in an attempt to find an underground river.

This was version 0.31.01, so yeah, my search was fruitless.

Another noob-y thing i used to do was making farms of nothing but plump helmets. After awhile everyone was nude and i was wondering how to make new clothes. Pig tails? what are those?   ???

Ah yes, the insatiable lust of corn and rice, clearly two of the most erotic foods.

Very first fortress

Accidentally abandoned it under the impression that the "Abandon Fortress" option was a genera savy quit to menu key.

Didn't learn to reclaim fortresses until a good 5 forts in the same world later :P

I read the wiki as if it were a cross between the holy bible and the pokedex.

I don't know about unicorns, but back in .95, one of my PA soldiers was diagnosed with power armor. I drew a fairly good picture about it, but my science project (a bunny) pissed all over it.

My first fort died due to thirst (ran out of booze) and failing to get a well up in time as compensation. Or more accurately, it died because this was 40d and carp were murder machines then. I wondered why there were blood stains all over my river.

It took me about 6 forts before I had the courage to experiment with magma. Again, this was 40d days where the only reliable magma was at volcanos. Nowadays I just dig down to tap the guaranteed magma, typically within the first month of embark.

Congrats, Psieye. This is the first time I've seen a derailed thread get put back on the rails.

I have to say I read most of the wiki and parts of the forums before I started playing.  I tinkered about with cheaty reactions and mineral RAWs.  SPEED:1 dwarfs embarked on a limestone and marble mountain with heaps of iron and coal.
Still died 1 year in from my first ambush.  Helpful hint: when digging or designating walls remember to cover diagonal spaces. Also ambushes can happen freaking early.  Also also traps are all well and good and I still use them -sparingly- today, but they are generally single shot weapons in any engagement, you need at least as many of them as you have hostiles in order to rely on them completely for defense.

Also3 it was at least several months before I became a devout glassworks enthusiast.

It's faster to write "!!science!!" than any of the synonyms: "mad science", "dwarvern science", or "crimes against the laws of god and man".

This is a phase of learning DF, yes. Starting up many forts because either they die fast or you realise you could have done something better. It's good for learning the ropes early on. Later on, players (though not all) tend to grow out of this phase and watch what kind of mayhem they can still survive through.

One of my dwarves got attacked by a werebuffalo as soon as the bedrooms were made in my first fort. Figured he was just a little wounded since he went back to his room to rest. Full moon comes, cue kitten massacre in the dining room. Couple dwarves bitten, no idea what to do, no military. Amazingly a couple hunters put the first werebuffalo down, but the damage was done and next full moon the other two ran amok on the remaining dwarves.

I gave my sheriff a whip, thinking it would make a good punishment weapon. There were 3 survivors.

My dwarves died. Of starvation.
Not dehydration, not soberness, STARVATION.
