What did you do when you were a newbie at DF?
« on: January 03, 2013, 08:30:28 am »

Well yeah I'm a noob at DF, I've only started playing on the New Years and I find Dwarf Fortress VERY Interesting
So yeah all I do is mine, build buildings made of stone, train military, trade.
I have no idea how those pump things work lol

When I was a noob I built danger rooms with 10x training spears per tile and I "autodumped" all my loose stone, but I've since felt pretty cheap about both of these.

As a new player you should experiment and start many new forts to find your game style.

One of the good old threads ( http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=94422.0 ) talks about Simulationists, Constructionists, and Gamists.

The important lession is that there is no 'right' way to play DF. (You are only wrong if you don't enjoy it. ;-) )

Heh, my first game (not counting tutorial) was building a huge, high watertower with floodgates at it's base. Thanks to water pressure opening those floodgates resulted in a powerful tsunami sweeping goblins into drown-room. Until building destroyer came and flooded my fortress, everything went fine  :D

My first fort had a huge entrance convered in stonefall traps, used only 1 z-level (I couldn`t figure out the symbols well enough to get which button shifted z-levels  until well into the fort). I did learn how to savescum and use cage traps.

What killed it was the bright idea of using a lasher to "train" my piss-poor militia by releasing it right into the barracks (which didnt even have a door). This was before the coup-de-grace improvement to combat so the goblin proceeded to casually cripple the militia and then dance around the hallways causally crippling all the dwarves I tossed at it. Something like 50+ dwarves lay screaming in pain around the hallway, then fall hit and I couldn`t even savescum. My first abandon.

I had a sprawling fort with workshops scattered about, pastures all over a 4x4 embark, and the traps in my tunnels at the *far end* of the tunnels.  Poorly understood military organization, burrows, and various commands that make fort management easier.  Lost 15-20 dwarves to an ettin and handled a minor tantrum spiral as a result.

Read the forum and wiki a lot for ideas for improvements and essentially used the fort as a testbed for some of them; animal ambush detection, archery bunkers, "grinders", etc.

The next fort was started with a much better idea of how to organize things, structure the fort for expansion and exploitation of resources, and how to keep it defended.

Many things. The worst among them was thinking I needed to vent out my butcher's shop with a hole outside....Goblin's walked inside the hole and killed everything.

learn to use Quickfort and Dwarf Therapist.
Especially quickfort, I spend as much time trying out ideas in excel as I do in DF... maybe more

The times before I knew how burrows work... or how mass dump designation works.. or even before Dwarf Therapist *shrugs*
Those were very dark days.

My first meeting with wildlife: croc frightened my woodcutter. Finaly croc got angry and attacked my dwarfs. My only weapon was the woodcutter's axe, but the woodcutter just ran away from croc. So I abandoned my fort before first caravan.

The fortresses are penal colonies.
The mountainhome has far too many degenerates too deal with by itself, so it sends out minor nobles to establish penal colonies across the world.
