Order our worshippers in battle stations
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

"My children," you murmur solemly, "The hour is upon us, attend the defenses."

The few noncombatants were ushered swiftly indoors, and the remaining villagers gathered into groups of 4-5, each unit tasked with defending a different section of wall. Half of each squad had their blunt weapon out, while the others wielded slashing weapons.

Eldrick stood nervously, idly sharpening a weathered broadsword that shone with a hint of Frost magic - you surmise that it was his grandfather's. Tiberius, no longer needing weapons of course, patrolled around the perimeter of the wall, never tiring.
Azula mostly just looked irritated that the enemy wouldn't get it over with and arrive already.

I say we also send out some of the fire jackets to his priests.

You reach out to touch the minds of your loyal Firejackets, and instruct them to go forth in search of humans in black robes, and slaughter any they find. The undead were many, but the boon-empowered clerics were an order of magnitude more dangerous than the individual skeletons. With an agitated buzzing sound, all 80 Firejackets took to the sky, rushing forward in the direction of Maher's oncoming forces.

That done, you zoom your awareness to the enemy forces. Legions of skeletons and zombies were marching through the trees, under an unceasing assault of sporecluster projectiles - which had absolutely no effect on the skeletons. With no organic material, the sporeclusters simply fell off them.

The zombies however, were a different story entirely. As you watch, a dozen of them fell to the fungus, the rotting flesh fueling even quicker growth than healthy, resisting flesh, and in a matter of moments they rose again to shamble towards their former comrades. Unfortunately, the zombies made up a mere quarter of the enemy horde. Still, the Fungus Spawn which they became slowed the enemy considerably, forcing them to stop to eliminate them or risk losing even more skeletons than they already were to the creeping horrors.

The clerics strode uncaringly through the barrage from the trees, the life in the spores snuffed out like a torch doused in water the second they got within a foot of them. It didn't feel like a boon's magic, you muse to yourself thoughtfully. More like a working that Maher himself cast on them - likely immediately after realizing the threat that the trees posed.

One such cleric didn't blink an eyelash when five Fungus Spawn charged him at once - which proved to be a fatal mistake. The first two Fungus Spawn collapsed into quivering convulsions upon entering the death barrier, but the remaining three managed to charge in with only a pained stagger and promptly proceeded to leap onto the cleric and start ripping off chunks of flesh.

So, the barrier had limits. Something as small as spores could be snuffed out easily, but things as large as Fungus Spawn seemed to find it only temporarily incapacitating, at least when attacking in groups.

At this point in the battle, all the zombies had been converted but Maher's army was 3/4 of the way through the corrupted forest, minutes from the village. A quick estimate tells you that 207 skeletons remain, along with five clerics.

Your Firejackets have just found the clerics' location, and are rushing in for the assault.

Order Fungus Spawn to dogpile any clerics they see(?). keep a eye on the village, this maybe a distraction.

And stop the Firetrackers, those death fields will be bad for them.

We can't control the Fungus Spawn. But...20 fire jackets should attack a single

No... Firejackets should retreat

There are no need to use then now. Death field is lethal for small creatures. Our fire bugs should join the fight when the real battle will begin. We have too few forces to waste them on small attack waves

Just found this game, It's awesome. Come for the donut, stay for the chaos dreadnought!

The firejackets should retreat indeed.
Make sure that everybody is within the thorn wall.
By making said wall semi-permeable in some places, we could funnel the ennemies and let them arrive right before our dreadnought, one by one.

Agreed. If for some reason they DO attack, have them focus on the guys who don't kill them by being a foot or two away.
Maybe have some start a new nest in the forest. I like that idea--a forest of trees which fire mutagenic spores and flies which set you on fire.

Rest at the same time, trying to get into his eyeballs, and incinerate his brain, I wanna see how many would die.

You order the firejackets to abort their charge, instead sending then to hover above the enemy contingent. Those death barriers certainly pose a problem.

Most of the clerics are travelling in a tight group now, obviously unnerved by the Fungus Spawn. However, one rather overweight cleric is lagging behind, and has attracted the attention of a Fungus Spawn. Seeing an opportunity, you order twenty firejackets to attack, timing it as accurately as you can with the Fungus Spawn's charge.

The Fungus Spawn enters the barrier a moment before the firejackets, and collapses - the wings of the firejackets go limp as well. However, their momentum carries them onward, and they slam into the cleric with twenty tiny thuds of impact. The cleric screamed as he caught fire, trying to stamp out the flames to no avail.

As the cleric and the corpse of the Fungus Spawn ignite, you see with satisfaction that the firejackets are stirring in the heat, their wings starting to twitch. It'll take a while for those 20 to be combat-ready again though, you belatedly realize.

The four remaining clerics and the 201 skeletons now remaining are now in sight of the village.

Make sure that everybody is within the thorn wall.
By making said wall semi-permeable in some places, we could funnel the ennemies and let them arrive right before our dreadnought, one by one.

"Tiberius," you murmur. "Open up a small entrance in the North-East section of the wall, and stand within it to receive our guests. We've been quite impolite hosts this far, it is time to greet them face to face."

"With pleasure," the Chaos Golem answered, striding to the section of wall, which slid apart to admit him. He strode forward until he was halfway through the opening in the wall, and waited, thorn-tendrils twitching with deadly anticipation.

You see the enemy clerics accessing the situation from behind a protective wall of skeletons, and one points out the hole in the wall. One bellows an order, and the skeletons broke into a charge, a full one-hundred making for the gap in the wall while the others move to spread out around it, looking for other ways through.

As you watch the mass of skeletons come within range of Tiberius, you are struck by the impression that if he could still grin, he would be. The right arm of the golem raises ominously, and a white-hot torrent of fire bursts out to receive the invaders, burning the first dozen to ashes in the opening moments of the battle.

His left arm erupted with writhing tendrils, which snaked forward to seize skeletons and then dash them into the earth with the force of a sledgehammer. You chuckle merrily at the sound of bones shattering.

Turning your attention to the other areas of the wall, the skeletons are futily trying to force their way through, with little progress. The defenders begin to hack mercilessly at any skeletal hand or foot that manages to squirm most of the way through the wall, resulting in some skeletons that were reduced to malevolent torso's.

With sudden alarm, you see a few intact skeletons that actually made it through two spots of the wall that look suddenly withered and impotent. Looking closer, you see the culprits - two clerics you hadn't seen, close enough to the wall to affect it with their death barrier. More skeletons are being re-routed to the weakened sections with every passing moment.

Faced with the undead on even ground, the squad of villagers assigned to that section froze in indecision - you can see their hands shaking. Abruptly, a lance of flame cut through the closest skeleton, shattering it and slamming through the next two in line.
"Don't just stand there," Azula snaps. "Let's get them!"

"Right behind you," Eldrick answered, his broadsword gripped in steady hands.

The two charged the onrushing skeletons, and were swiftly reinforced by the other villagers who had mustered the courage to attack.

Eldrick cleaves the skull of one opponent in half, kicking the body away from him, then gestures at a trio of skeletons rushing him. Small thorn bushes sprouted instantly at their feet, toppling their charge and sending them sprawling at his feet. Three swift strokes of the broadsword ended their frantic attempts to regain their feet, and Eldrick moved on to find another target.

You momentarily check on Tiberius, and find him still fighting with as much energy as before, except now surrounded by a growing pile of bones and skulls. You don't expect that entrance to fall anytime soon.

Even the Priest is doing his part, wielding a mace with such alarity that you suspect he's seen combat on such a scale before.

Two villagers, however, have fallen already, and there are many skeletons remaining.

Suddenly, a horn blows, surprising both sides. You swing your awareness about incredulously to see a tide of green bodies rushing in from the west.
"Our hour has come!" a familiar voice roars.

The leading orc, covered in scars and wielding a staff sweeps his hands dramatically forward, and Grumugga's voice came from his mouth. "Kill them, kill them all! Smash the undead, spear the humans!", Grumugga screamed triumphantly.

An exasperated sigh answers the proclamation, and Maher's voice dryly replies, "Grumugga, the adults are trying to have an interesting little war here. Wait your turn and I'll be happy to eradicate your little green friends tomorrow."

Grumugga guffaws through the orc she's possessing.
"You see, death god scared!" she sneered, and the orc legions swept forward.

"Oh well," Maher murmured. "I did try to warn her."
An ominous rumbling sounded from the skies above, and lightning rained down in a torrent upon the orcs. Two hundred died in the first moments, as lightning bolts continued to pour down, striking an orc and then arcing to those around him.

Some kind of water magic sluicing continuously across the green flesh of the orcs was keeping the spores from infesting the remaining legions of greenskins - you shudder momentarily to wonder how much mana that had cost - and likewise keeping the slain orcs from being reanimated by Maher, you presumed. Eighty skeletons broke off the assault to charge the greenskin army, and the remaining Fungus Spawn lurched out of the dark forest to attack both sides. Suffice to say, Chaos ensued.

What do you do? Your 60 combat-ready firejackets are circling above the village, the two clerics next to the wall continue to weaken the openings, and two villagers have fallen so far.

As soon as Tiberius is done with the skeletons, send him to those clerics that are weakening our barrier. I wish we had more mana, we need a champion of life to get through the death barriers.

The orcs have no death fields, send a few experimental firejackets after them. If they are successful, send more.

No! The orcs are outside fighting the skeletons, we need them alive until the greater threat is gone.
