Yeah giving them orders would be cool; I like the thought of building my own necro tower or maybe ordering my zombies to destroy an enemy building.  Really though, the biggest thing that needs to change is the way ambushes work.  Just my opinion though.

It is sensible in the sense that enemies are likely to refrain from making an ambush unless they outnumber their quarry. I wouldn't ambush a party of armed men and women unless my bandits outnumbered their adventurers! This is probably what Toady was thinking. We're not used to it because it isn't a 'gamey' way of doing things, but it makes more sense when you think about it.

The problem is that it feels like DF decides an ambush is going to happen and then generates more bad guys than good guys. It would be better if bandit groups had a fixed size, and then decided to ambush based on whether or not they outnumbered you. That way, having a large entourage would discourage bandit attacks, which makes more sense; although, really, bandits shouldn't be going after adventurers. They should be going after caravans. At the moment, there's no way to spy on large groups from a distance or track people, but that should change in the next release. Whatever... adventurer mode will be much more interesting soon. And getting better all the time!

I agree with a lot of what you say, but when it comes down to it I just can't understand what the logic is behind an army of 400+ goblins deciding that the best thing to do with all that manpower is to go and attack that necromancer wandering through the woods with almost no valuable possessions but an almost equal sized army of 300+ naked zombies and skeletons and who can reanimate anything that dies at will.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I'm just going to drop this here. My guy was a vampire, so getting the books wasn't really hard. But yeah. 600.

It's really not that hard. The ambushes I get are easily defeated through the application of massive manpower, especially considering I can raise anything that dies, sometimes in several parts. I eventually quit that game though, because my dwarf had a destroyed nerve in his foot, leaving him limping around the place. That picture is actually from when I tried finding a crutch. To no avail. I think I slaughtered 2-3 villages before giving up.

No, not that. I mean... Did your game not slow to a chug or something?

Not really, no. The problem was really only that I moved so slowly that my companions had three-four actions to each one of mine. But it wasn't that laggy.

Huh yeah, that's why I almost always go the werecreature route.  Being able to regrow anything is a big plus for me.
