Champion with Artifact armor
« on: June 02, 2008, 01:01:00 pm »

I just dumped my Champion's (Iron chain mail), figuring she needed some better protection.  So what did she do?  She went and grabbed "Deg Kisat", a Silver plate mail worth about 212k dwarfbucks.  That's cool and all, and I'm sure she looks like a bad-ass (it's got an image of a dwarf striking down a goblin), but wouldn't she be better off with some nice *Steel plate mail*?  I'm considering dumping the silver plate off of her, but I wanted to hear what other people have to say first.

Doesn't the fact that the armour is legendary cause the quality of the armor protection wise to increase as well?

Artifacts have a value bonus, but I am unaware of any actual increase in effectiveness, unless it automatically counts as Masterful. Even if that were the case, silver is fairly weak (to my knowledge) and a Masterful silver piece is as effective as a basic iron piece.

Steel is always the way to go. The only problem is I don't think dwarves will drop artifacts once they've taken them. : /

The artifact quality bonus is better than masterwork, though it's not clear how much better.

I believe Toady has said that legendary was better, perhaps significantly better, than masterful.

You are suggesting using *quality* items, which have a modifier of 1.6.  Steel has a modifier of 1.33 and Silver has a modifier of 0.5.  Assuming these modifiers multiply with each other, the math goes like this.

code:

X x 0.5 >= 1.6 x 1.33
   X/2 >= 2.128
     X >= 2 x 2.128
     X >= 4.256

The legendary modifer would have to be better than 4.256, if the modifiers multiply like that.

Will dwarves give up Artifacts once equipped?

They won't, but you still can dump items from them.

About efficiency, wiki says clearly:

quote:
Artifact items have a quality modifier of 120×. This is applied on top of the item's base value, its decorations and the value of all materials used in its construction.

Silver has 50% efficiency. Thus a silver artifact armor has 120x0.50=60x iron value and 60/1.3=45,15 times better than a usual [steel armor] or 60/(1.3x12)=3,85 times better than a [☼masterful steel plate☼]

120x seems ludicrous; I'd believe 12x, though.

120x is the value modifier. The combat modifiers are unknown.
http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Quality

"Legendary artifact items have a unique name instead of bracketing symbols and are worth 120x base value. They have a higher combat modifier than Masterful items, although the specific modifier is unknown. Artifacts, like masterpiece items, will cause a significant mood drop in the creator when destroyed or stolen."

For example, a Masterwork weapon has a value modifier of 12x, but a combat modifier of 2x.

Read again that article and ARTIFACT article.
120x QUALITY modifier.
And quality stands for damage too, it's the same parameter which is affected by good-crafted status.

I was wrong about 120x damage though but I think there's some kind of progression. Or maybe these parameters are different, but I don't see a reason to differentiate QUALITY and VALUE then, it confuses me.

Yeah, I'm really confused by most of what I'm reading. I'm just assuming it's insanely valuable and somewhat more powerful than a Masterful item. I keep all my artifacts in a vault so I don't have to think about this anyway. ^^

The common theory is that it provides a bonus of x5.  However, that is just theory, the real numbers are unknown.

I wonder if even Toady knows what it is...

120x, that would be epic.  Imagine an artifact adamantine warhammer, you'd put things in orbit.

I had this thing =).
And it sent thing to fly pretty far.
Though it wasn't 120x then because  I didn't kill a demon in 1 hit (it took me to land 3 hits, and every time he was flying away).

Well, that seems pretty damn nice.  I think I'll let the dwarf-chick keep her shiny armor.  It's a good thing that combat doesn't damage armor, otherwise I'd have a pissed off armorer before too long.
