didn't read any of the replies,
but you can overclock your phone if you root it,
also, some pirated games, like Final Fantasy 3($30 in android marketplace), will only work on a rooted phone,
and you can install a custom OS to replace the one it came with,
some tools can only be used on a rooted phone, like apps that crack WEP wireless passwords and stuff.
