Also, Lassos do not count as slings. For one, they are several times longer.

I've been involved in plenty of rope.  If it's long enough to sling a rifle on, then you just wear it shorter.  All that loose space will make it a decent fit around the shoulder.  Worst case, loop it around the upper arm and velcro it to itself.

Pictures of cowboys are just a lot easier to find.

Well... There is always the ling lat acts like a lanyard... Those do exist... But those are mostly for pistols.

Then you wear it like a sash. Come on guys. Is it so hard to imagine a loop of cordage hanging off the shoulder and around the torso?

Think I'd still prefer a sort rifle sheathe strapped to my back. It'd be less cumbersome and stop the rifle from moving or sliding around while doing extreme forms of movement.

Well, we could have both: a sling who would be easier to craft, but give more encumbrance than a rifle sheath.

Also, RE: various rifles not fitting into one sheathe, you could abstract it away by making it craftable-only as a 'survivor rifle sheath', which would mean it's tailor-made by yourself to suit your gunslinging-related needs and would be less cumbersome than a one-size-fits-all piece of leather worn around your arm.

Less cumbersome, not not cumbersome. Could be like 1 & 2 points respectively. But, keep in mind, wearing it will, on itself, add encumberance from the amount of items worn.

Well, then the issue is that a typical rifle is between 12 and 18 volumes. A backpack will let you carry two of those for 1 encumbrance. (Actually, you can fit a M249 into a backpack. We have mad backpacks, yo.)
