I tried new cataclysm a few weeks ago -> ambushed like 20 steps outside the saferoom by a hulk and pummeled to death.

I just tried the newest version.... there's a kreck right outside the saferoom that smashs the window and starts chasing me from turn 1. I only survive because it walks into a puddle of acid from a spitter zombie and melts, but it hardly matters because there's several zombie dogs (and the spitter) chasing me too now so I die.

is.... it normal to have midgame monsters starting right out on top of you or do I have really bad luck?

Stand next to a vehicle, and hit 'G' to grab, chose a direction.  Then you'll drag it around with you.  Hit 'G' again to release.

Wow, that SirHoder Tileset is the diggity bomb-snizzle!

All self promotion aside, I'm pretty psyched to have my work picked up in the official release.  Still have gobs and gobs of sprites to sort out (there's something like 1100 items) before things are "done", but the game is pretty much completely playable using tiles.

I'm not developing directly into the repository, current updates are being posted to my thread on the forums.

I turned on static NPCs and did a kill the mom quest, the town was a little hectic so I wanted somebody to outrun when things get hairy ("I don't have to outrun the zombie horde, I just have to outrun you.")  So I turned in the quest, gained a little firearms skill by converting a glowstick into it, decided to head back into town with the half empty car I had found.

The NPC... she...she got in the car with me...
O_O When was this witchery implemented and why did I not notice it sooner?  I might take advantage of NPCs more often now...

That was implemented quite a while back...*code archaeology*... In January.
Hence the new motorcycle with sidecar you might run across now :)

She died, but it was awesome, she died after jumping through a window I bunkered up behind and biting and clawing at the zombie horde like some kind of feral beast.  A dwarven way to die.  I on the other hand hid behind the windows like an elf hitting zombies with my nailbat as they crawled through.

I did spot a small, minor little bug though. When I went to run over a zombie she started beating the crap out of ME in the drivers seat til the zombie became a hood orniment.  Good thing the only thing she had was a glowstick.

I also noticed that I have global taunt.  If I'm in range they attack me, regardless of what else is around if I want to protect a NPC all I need to do is come withing attack range and everything will forget the NPC is even there.  But that's probably more a missing feature than a bug.

Still I am very happy that one of my wanted NPC features has been implemented, and I am disappointed in myself for not noticing for so long.  Thanks devs!

Yeah it's a real shame the current NPC's are dumb as bricks and half-mad. The NPC update is one of the ones I most look forward to. I'm imagining some fortified, reclaimed FEMA camps, works buildings, or LMOE shelters with small camps of survivors, or larger freehold factions, STALKER style.

I could be entirely wrong about that, though. ;)

And then, they will be weaponized. Like everything in this game, from kittens to babies, everything is a potential device of murder.
So if baseless speculation is all we have, we might as well treat it like fact.

Maybe the Devs could trick people by secretly making multiplayer, then releasing it as the NPC update with the other players having NPC colorings instead of player colors.
