Yeah, I think I'll stick to ASCII too, but I don't worry too much about the game's audience changing. People that are attracted to DF & Cataclysm are those that like complex game with lots of possibilities and are willing to sacrifice looks for contents, with or without a tileset.

@stuntaneous
I would like to point out that just because you don't have a problem with figuring out ASCII doesn't mean others just aren't trying. Yes there are numerous examples of people who just don't want to bother but I never said that to not get ASCII a person has to be thick. Is a person Dense if they can't program? Because a number of studies have shown there is a good percentage of the population who just can't get it, one I heard my programming teacher quote actually said something like 50% of people can't. Also you discount the numerous problems that could cause someone to not get it ranging from things like dyslexia to having color blindness when talking about any roguelike that uses color. Basically I do believe that some people just can't parse ASCII and providing tiles for a game once it is far enough along in development will open it up to many more people. Now mind you I parse ASCII and did not even need to pick it up as a skill as it always made sense to me so I don't have any real authority on the subject of not being able to any more then you could but I really dislike definitives so I felt the need to argue with you over it. Also while arguing anyone can you basically say anyone that can't is thick which isn't really important in a forum post though it could cause some hate but in any more professional (IE if you have to show it to someone important) you probably want to be careful about saying things like "Anyone can do X, people aren't that Y" as it says if you can't X then you are Y.

Akhier:

In a professional setting, which yeah is irrelevant here, I'm not one to beat around the bush and would say the same. I don't think interpreting ASCII is out of the reach of anyone. Also, I did leave room for those who have particular issues with it, i.e. medical in nature.

Basically, easy tiger!

I think this argument has been hashed out enough times in the DF forums proper, yes?

Apparently not....

Saying that tilesets are easymode just indicates that you're elitist. I prefer ASCII over tilesets, but I don't care if somebody uses tilesets or ASCII. The game itself remains exactly the same.

Just to add my very short thoughts -

I detest ASCII. I hate it. I have an imagination, and I read an awful lot and put that to good use there - but in gaming, for me, I want to be taken on an immersive journey - and whilst some LOVE ASCII for that, I hate it - I hate having to learn what each character means. It's a chore!

That's not me asking for a debate here - you will NOT change my mind, just as I won't (and wouldn't want to) change YOUR mind on liking ASCII. You love it, I hate it, we're different people - all is good :)

And neither SHOULD either of us try and change views - and neither should we feel aggrieved that a tileset is or isn't present. Adding graphical support can do NOTHING to hurt the game - there are NO concerns that should be had. Yes, it might widen the playerbase, but that's not a bad thing - that's an awesome thing. It doesn't mean the core game has to change at all, it doesn't mean it has to be simplified - it means other people, who hate ASCII, can enjoy an amazing and in-depth game and remember what gaming is all about.

I'm really glad Cataclysm is offering tileset support again, and I really hope a functional and worthy tileset is on the scene soon. Had it not have been, I doubt I'd ever have played Cataclysm again.

The word I tend to use is douche.

With the way stuntaneous is talking you might as well take it a step further and say ASCII graphics, and all graphics, are bad. You might as well just have text descriptions for everything to allow your imagination to picture the scene, this also overcomes problems with ASCII like character overload for items, monsters and environment.

Agreed. Stuntaneous DOES come across as a douche, but a passionate douche - I respect his opinion, but I think he's completely and utterly wrong. He's concerned that graphics = poor game, but that's simply not true for 'indie' games. Graphics = accessibility, and opens up a fantastic game experience for those who aren't in love with text like he is.

That's not a bad thing, it's an amazing thing. It allows people to access a superb gaming experience and then - hopefully - put pressure on larger companies to offer gameplay over graphics, whilst still ensuring there's at least SOMETHING pretty to look at.

I just prefer ASCII because it looks nicer.
I have no complex opinions on the matter.

My personal favourite ASCII game is X@Com. It's not pure ASCII, but it retains the easy-to-read aesthetics of it.

I like having the option of ASCII or no. Otherwise, I don't care much.

I fully endorse tileset support and eagerly await the day when I can play Cata without feeling mildly terrified that at any moment I might notice a growing scintillating scotoma in my vision.
Oh god I had one of those once and it terrified me. Never since though so I guess I'm fine?

I prefer ASCII, personally, but having tilesets for other dudes is cool, too.  ASCII usually just looks cleaner, to me.

What I'm not too sure on is tileset-vehicles.  That seems like it'd get weird.

Some things track you by scent. I don't know if zeds do or not, though. I usually have a safehouse far out of town where I don't get bothered by much. Supposedly, duct-taping up a window keeps your scent from "leaking" outside, so that may be an option, though I could see doing that and then building reinforcing walls anyway to buy you time in an emergency.

And then, they will be weaponized. Like everything in this game, from kittens to babies, everything is a potential device of murder.
So if baseless speculation is all we have, we might as well treat it like fact.
