Found an odd typo in the Encumbrance screen when wearing gloves with negative encumbrance (Such as fitted Glove Liners). The bonuses are shown like this:

Reloading costs +-30 movement points;
Dexterity --1 when throwing items

When over encumbered, the penalties display properly. For comparison:

Reloading costs -30 movement points;
Dexterity -1 when throwing items

   Just thought I would ask but are bone needles supposed to not stack when on the ground? Also semi-related but is there a command to pick up everything in a square all at once? Cause if there isn't it would be useful if there was.

.4 doesnt have the starting NPC, you can enable it in the option fiole ini thingy somewhere.

DF doesn't mold players into its image - DF merely selects those who were always ready for DF.

Minecraft UI is very simple. There's only so many ways you can implement "simple" without copying something. We also gonna complain that it uses WASD?

Playing 0.4 now. Much more exciting than it used to be, new content is great but some gameplay issues and balance stuff has been bugging me for the last few versions.

Crossbows. Sure they should take longer than a mag change or notching an arrow, but have you fired a crossbow? The heavier ones that require the foot handle can be cocked in about 8 seconds. We need a variety of crossbows with different draw weights (different damage bonuses and reload times).

Watch 6 bolts fired in the time span of 10 arrows. It's only about half as slow as the bow. Yet the in the game they're about 4x slower.

Why can my 0-relevant skill starting character hit a zombie dog 5 tiles away with a crossbow reliably, but with any SMG still can't hit a building with the barrel pressed against the wall? Seriously, handguns are more reliably accurate at any range at the start of the game. I want to like SMGs, but they've always sucked in every version of the game to date.

I dunno. MP5 does pretty well with a high perception character.

   A zero skill person picking up a weapon of decent caliber would have troubles hitting the broad side of a barn. Have you ever seen one of the videos where a person shoots a handgun and they don't realize how much recoil it has and ends up hitting themselves on the head? Yeah thats about the story of the first shot for someone without experience with guns going and picking up a handgun and trying to shoot something with it. It takes one level of firearms to apply gun mods and these include simple things that if you have any experience with a gun. I have to assume a zero in firearms is basically never handled a gun before.
   Also I think crossbow reload speed was a balance thing because they are powerful and don't make sound like a gun and before static spawns when it was introduced this was quite important.

When did I say decent calibur? Any SMG. Have you handled one? They're easier to handle than a handgun assuming you are shooting semi-auto. The barrel length and size makes them a little less susceptible to unsteady hands than a small handgun is. They are and should be between a rifle and a handgun for how easy they are to use for someone with no skill. Yet you can handle a .44 magnum handgun in this better than a 9mm SMG. They have marginally better stats in the game, but in practice they still really, really suck. Focusing on SMG's has always been a death sentence for all of my characters since the original Cataclysm.

Bows are silent too. Yet they only take about 200 movement points to reload and shoot. Balance issues what now? Either the bow needs to take 400 movement points approx to move and shoot, or the crossbow needs to take about 400 points. Either way, the crossbow should only be about half as slow as the bow.

Seeing how the player character managed to run away from zombies, graboids, and subspace demon before finding a safe house, you would expect them all to be competent with improvising weapons they don't have experience in.

   I just used the handgun example because I always think of it first when I think of stuff like this. Yes I have handled an SMG and a handgun and a rifle and my goodness have I shot a lot of guns. My dad used to own a gun shop, I have been using them since I was old enough to know which way the barrel needs to stay pointed. I think you over estimate how well someone with no experience with a gun will do. Sure at least now basically everyone knows which end the bullets come out of but the saying about said idiom was rooted in the reality of people not always knowing that fact. I know people that if I gave them a gun with the safety on they would try pulling the trigger without checking if it was loaded and then say it was broken because the trigger doesn't work.

@Objective
Mostly sure thats not how you get there. You start with perfectly fine clothes, a pocket knife, and some matches. You probably ran there before it all went to that hot place. Honestly milk is just spoiling when you first come out of the shelter so since the powers out its hardly been any time at all since the end. The best guess people have is it all happened all at once in some kind of megapocolypse.

We have an awesome few tilesets, and a couple older versions that support them.

Unfortunately, keeping the tileset code stuff up to date is /extremely hard/. We're hoping to get a proper implementation one of these days, hopefully soon

Until then, you can either use:
Tase's somewhat kind of recent not 100% complete version, here:
https://github.com/tasetase/DDAtase/tree/tiles

Or Deon or Fat Dogs old 1.6 tilesets.
Deons:

Fat Dogs:

Sorry to be an awful bore, but how do I get the tileset in the first link to work?

I *thought* it might already come bundled with Cataclysm: DDA but I can't find an .exe or any other sort of executable for the game.

Am I doing something wrong? Do I need to download C:DDA and then copy/paste the contents from the first link?

Also - is that still the most up-to-date option in terms of tileset?

DDA does not have a tileset yet, the existing tilesets are for an old version of Whales' cataclysm.
The github link is Tase's repo, he's the one working on porting the tiles to DDA, to use it you need to compile the repo yourself.
