I would imagine ammunition would just sort of explode after having a small flame held under it, right? There would be no massive fire (in the middle of a road)?
Actually, exploding ammo like you see in the movies is rare, and it's a carry over from when gunpowder was separate from the bullet. That caused explosions. Today, it's unheard of with modern small arms. There's powder in them, sure, but if you manage to light it, it'll just burn slowly rather than explode. Even if you heat the bullet to high enough temperatures without exposing the powder to flames, the brass will expand and compromise the powder, possibly burning the powder but sans explosive energy. There's just not enough powder burning at once, and if the bullet's compromised to the point where its insides are burning then the gases are going to escape too quickly to build any explosive pressure.

Primers, the little bits on bullets that the hammer hits when you pull the trigger, are what cause almost immediate combustion of all of the powder in the bullet. For conventional bullets, it's pretty difficult to do that without actually hitting the primer. The only reasonable way to make a bullet explode is to hit the primer outside of a bullet, and while the force may be powerful to launch some shrapnel from the brass and blow off fingers, it won't do much more than that, and it certainly won't start a fire.

You've obviously never been standing near a burning house when someone's supply of ammo decides to go off.

But no, it wouldn't create a wall of fire. It is quite possible for a bullet to go off without a strike to the primer though.

I've never met anyone with a supply of ammunition. I can't really think why anyone would need one?

Just incase a giant worm bust into your basement because you were running some kind of shaker thing and you and your wife wanted to become the most badass characters in the history of B-Movies?

I was wrong about the exploding part, but it's not lethal unless it's inside a gun.

Yeah, but wiping out a bunch of zombies with an exploding ammo fire is cool and fun, and therefore trumps reality.

Fair enough I guess.
Really, their badassery is surprising and potentially unnecessary. They could probably have just done the thing they did anyway instead of firing ALL OF THE GUNS at the wormsnakething.

As of starting on DDA, I'm still completely sucking at this game. I manage to search maybe 3 or 4 buildings before the zombies show up. I've only once found a gun with ammo which I ended up using against wolves and cougars. The one character recently that actually found really good equipment and supplies was armed with just a combat knife and ended up dying to wild animals while trying to hide out away from cities.

I've also not found any vehicles in a long time... (I think I haven't found any in DDA, only in the previous versions.)

@sluissa

First thing you do is get to a city ASAP, but before 9:30AM - the zombies spawn that time. Get as much loot as you can from houses, military sulprus, sporting good stores and libraries. After that, set for the wilderness.

Find a LMOE shelter, those will save your lives. I hope you took a pot with you from the city - with it, you can boil water to make it clean, cook veggies and meat from animals/triffids, and much more. LMOE shelters are virtually unbreachable by creatures, and they've got firearms, weapons and supplies in them.

I find that strange considering they're about three times more likely to spawn in DDA than in vanilla. With the added spawn locations and then the straight up increased spawn chance.
