Having just started the game and asked my shelter-mate to share some equipment, he hands me... a Boeing XM-P Plasma Rifle. What the?

Well, I ain't complaining. Is there any place to get hydrogen?
Wow, you're one lucky asshole, you.
Too bad that this being your first time, you'll probably die pretty fast anyway :/.
My apologizes for my badly worded post... should probably fix it. :P I have been playing Cata for quite a while now but since no hydrogen has been found by any of my characters (Hulks sometimes, necromancers and zombies almost certainly always.), I felt the need to ask.

EDIT: Oh and thank you. :) The last time I asked an NPC for anything was a month ago... the NPC gave me an active grenade that time.

Check out labs, you can gain access to them with science ID's, wich are found on the corpses of scientists.

Great, thanks! Now, I just have to loot those dead scientist who are in the middle of the street... surrounded by giant wasps.

Wasps will usually leave you alone, or atleast let you go. Atleast htats my experience. Animal empathy might help on this, im not quite sure.

Put it in some warehouse and remember to get it back later after you can get your hands on hydrogen.
That way if you die you can go and retrieve it. Not so good RP-wise, but efficient.

Who cares about RP in a singleplayer sandbox game anyway.. :P

Thinking of trying out this new version. Just one thing always ends up ruining my fun... Well, a few things actually.

It's those higher level/more exotic threats, like Triffids and Fungals. In my last game, I had a greatly skilled, well-equipped character attempt to take out a fungal spire. I had read from veteran players here that you should be able to burn spires down with fire. Sounded simple enough. Most recommended method: molotovs. Do you think that worked? Over the course of an ingame week, I threw about thirty of them right at the beating heart of that stuff, and would it die? Fuck no. It just sat there, burning, for DAYS ON END, constantly healing itself and dousing the flames and rebuilding those annoying walls that were impossible to break down long enough to access the center tile. Most damage I saw was "mildly hurt". I'd end up surrounded by fungus monsters that were multiplying by 500x every turn. There were so many of them in the area that I started seriously worrying about RAM usage, and I have 8GB! Eventually I'd run out of food/water/molotovs, and be forced to head back to town... and when I came back, fully restocked, it was as if I'd never visited. The spire would be at max health again, and there was just no point in trying.

It's disheartening, because nobody else seems to have that much trouble dealing with them. Eventually, I'd made so much noise and destruction and so many increasingly careless trips into the city for supplies... Of course, I slipped up. Ran into a Hulk when my speed was down and I couldn't escape it. That was the end of many hours skilltraining. Again. I just dunno what I do wrong. It really spoils the game for me. I reach a point where normal zombie hoardes become little more than a chore to cut through, and yet I still can't handle any of the more serious threats.

Mininukes, find them in the labs.
Generally labs are the solution, and causees of every problem in the game.
Those mininukes are strong enough to wipe an entire map tile.

or that

For the Hulk or the triffids? If the former, it is indeed a very good idea but it doesn't work for the latter, especially if the Triffid Grove is located directly in the middle of a forest.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Well, the only two times I destroyed a triffid grove was by taking two NPCs and a rifle (with a lot of ammo) with me. Stand so that it is either directly some tiles above/below you and shoot one of the walls protecting the heart. Now, shoot at it, throw a grenade at it, do anything to it (except melee) and if it regenerates its wall again, then shoot it down again.

Of course it won't always work, because sometimes the (rather dumb) NPCs will also decide to charge the heart. If that happens, either hope that the triffids go and kill the NPCs, kill the triffid heart quickly (if it is seriously injured), or run the heck away.

It is also worth mentioning the last time I destroyed a Triffid Grove was during the time when Whales was developing the game, so it may not be so accurate for nowadays.

I never seem to find any powerful weapons like that, though. Just on extremely rare occasions. I guess I approached the problem wrong, because I assumed the fire would be enough to kill them.

Molitovs usually work for me against fungal spires.  Hell, once I took one out with a half dozen 2x4s and a lighter.  Need to make sure you attack when it isn't raining though, or fire will do jack.  Another option is explosives.  Pipe bombs, grenades, grenade launchers, mininukes...
