And as mentioned mutated plants that hate you are a possibility. taking strawberries you have the infestation start in a tile and slowly spread unless the player does something about it with a giant boss in the center. This could even be a more dynamic thing than the current setup. As it is you have boss fights in specific spots and once you kill most of them they are gone. With stuff like this you could have threats pop up occasionally even in cleared areas. If you balance it right it would be interesting while not tedious or overpowering. Even as a static boss like the other stuff it would add variety to the current mix.

So it seems I accidentally put my canteen in my wheelbarrow and didn't notice... and then I got really thirsty... so right before going to sleep I go to take a swig from my canteen and... end up snorting a line of low-grade meth.

I can think of something that might be fun to add for people who like to build up - power generators.  Their use would be to power a building, opening possibilities for operating refrigerators (reducing spoilage rates for perishables), electric lighting, computer consoles (that is, games for morale), and a general oasis of civilization for your home base.  That is, assuming you go with a stationary structure and don't do something like use an R.V. converted into an armoured tank for a mobile home base.  You could have the usual loud, noisy, zombie-magnet gas-powered ones that would require regular foraging trips to keep topped off, but also quieter electric ones based on solar power that shut down at night unless you have enough battery capacity to keep them running 24-7.  You'd be able to loot these intact only rarely since, as noted, they'd be complete zombie-bait if left running in hostile areas, but if you don't get that lucky, you could also rig up one of your own with enough mechanics/fabrication skill either using car parts or from scratch.  I suppose there's a question of the "feel" of the apocalypse, though.

On that note, roving threats might be somewhat interesting.  Though I haven't been able to ever get very far, whether on static or dynamic, once you clear an area, it seems to remain cleared and (relatively) safe.  It might be interesting, once the initial days of the cataclysm pass and turn into weeks or months, things like zombie hordes that move in search of survivors after having scoured their original grounds clear; fungal spread that creates a relentlessly-encroaching threat; young queen ants and an entourage moving to create new hives; or maybe completely new threats that we haven't encountered yet.  After all, in any zombie film where they do create a stable settlement or simply a small base where they can live in relative peace before the last five minutes, the zombie threat always eventually reaches the protagonists, after all.  It'd be a test of defensive building and contingency planning, as well as a new challenge, and nomadic players could simply try to move around the threat since they don't have to defend a fixed location.

Also, love the idea of feral tomatoes as part of an agricultural/plant growth overhaul.  We have C.H.U.D., Them!, Day of the Triffids, and the like, so why not Attack of the Killer Tomatoes?  Also, if you want plants that grow in spite of a person's best efforts, try rhubarb. ^_^

-snip-
Pretty much all of this is already planned to go in eventually, we just haven't gotten there yet.

Oh, the whole electric system is soon to be, however still in vehicle form. I'm not up to date with current build but there was a pull request dividing engines into engines and alternators. Since you alredy can put kitchen, recharging station head lights and entire forge into a vehicle it won't take a lot of time to put fridges and morale increasing consoles. Problem is for now you have to be happy with building vehicle without wheels in your base.

I know that feeling with nasturtiums and strawberries.

ESPECIALLY the strawberries.

They spread from one area of the garden, across several feet of plastic covering and bark, to another area that had flowers in it. Until the strawberries outcompeted them.
This is a brilliant idea, however...I think I see enough of it with those Fungal Spires (or..a Triffid Grove..bleh. Whatever it was, it spawns those vine creepers.) >_<

I mean, one day I find a cabin. *checks map, sees a T (or a Triffid Grove..this happened a long time ago)*
"Still far away. Better sleep."
So I get to the bedroom and boltlock the door. There's a nice window with a clear view outside and I doubt those things can smash right in with the bed right next to the window--thereby obscuring me from anything outside.
*12 hours later*

Surprise surprise. I wake up, hungry and thirsty as usual, I check the local surroundings and nothing but the occasional yellow ? wandering outside. All my characters favor unarmed combat, so I readied my punch dagger and crept to the window.

I see vine creepers just tussling over each other at the window, just...being right outside. Watching me. o_o Sure, they didn't break in but..seeing that.

They're stalking me.

I've had wolves milling out outside a window for hours before. I assumed the wolves were following scent, but I didn't know plant monsters could smell things...

And then, they will be weaponized. Like everything in this game, from kittens to babies, everything is a potential device of murder.
So if baseless speculation is all we have, we might as well treat it like fact.

Unintentional plant pun.  And yeah I'm not sure I understand the scent mechanic that well either, just the vaguest of vague knowledge.

Oh, one more random idea. Bras should add volume. Have you seen how much a woman can carry in her bra? It's impressive (and sometimes disturbing).

Interestingly, according to the wiki Triffids can smell. Vine Beasts cannot. But they can see, and they can hear particularly well, so if they heard him walking or saw him through the window they would gang up like that.

What I remember back in that post there is its not one of those Vine Beasts (or anything referencing a beast), more like a 'creeper' or something--its a plant, and it isn't a swamp creature.

Yeah, everything in the triffids "faction" is all plant based life-forms.

I've been playing this game on and off since it first came out and I've never been that good at it but finally I survived one whole day with a broken leg due to a web spider out in the woods. Any tips for trying to set up in a base. I was using the emergency shelter I spawned it but it was too close to town and eventually even with all my measures to slow down zombies I eventually got to the point where the damage had accumulated to the point where I could barely move

Is there any texture pack that has updated textures, instead of a pink 'cancel' symbol for many things?
