Animal Empathy also doesn't exactly make sense within the setting and isn't supported.

Though I guess if you could go to the zoo and train the tiger into being your personal bodyguard.

That reminds me of a book we had to read last year in english. It was set in Australia after what is suggested to be the nuclear apocalypse. Australia is unharmed cause we don't have any nukes and everything has fallen to anarchy. then a kid tames a tiger. At least that's what I got from the book.

I can only assume Cataclysm has zoos... because it would be insane not to.

Indeed. Although the chances of encountering a bear there should be next to zero, since, you know, they own the houses in the city... all of them. Perhaps common zoo animals like Godzilla and King Kong could spawn in the zoos? :P

Just learned something that makes training up Construction easy. Get two heavy sticks, turn them into wooden spears. Take spears and turn them into a fence post. Smash fence post = 3 wooden spears. Repeat to get infinite wooden spears and easy Construction experience! Now I am at Construction lvl 3 and can now make some additions to my evac shelter ^_^ Going to make a nice mini fort. Not sure yet if the walls are as unsmashable as the generated walls, but if they are then I am going to make a nice apartment for myself with proper rooms (food storage, armory, etc) to last me until I have to move on. I have filled up all of the benches and counterspace in the original evac space so gotta upgrade heh.

I kinda wish there was more screaming, but rocks don't hurt so I guess it can't be helped.

Here is a question

Did Global warming also destroy the world in Cataclysm?
No, but very soon Global Warming combined with Darcke Magicke Sufficiently Advanced Science will be responsible for vast deserts, rainforests and tundras dotting Rural New England.

Nicely caught, fixed.

@Galen: They're smashable, and unless the devs decide to patch them, there're scent-permeable.
Constructed walls are nearly useless with those two facts, ans only serve to slightly delay the horde.

They're pretty damn hard for zombies to smash, so I wouldn't call them useless.

If they're smashable at all, and scent goes through them, then it's a matter of how many turns before you're surrounded.
A wall shouldn't have those problems, but a barricade could/should.
Considering the amount resources invested in a wall tile, they're too expensive to function the way they do.

A fraction of the time and resources, and a renaming to Barricade would be fine by me.

Sucks that they are smashable, but oh well. And damn :P How did you go about fixing the fenceposts? Changed the +1 wood spear thing and/or make them possibly destroy the spears when smashed?

Also, please give us concrete! The dry mix portion can be heavy and high volume but I'd like to be able to make proper walls using the following ingredients: Concrete Mix + Water to make [Concrete Slurry], Concrete Slurry + Pipes / Wooden Spears + [2x4]x10 + Nail x 20 = Half Finished Wall, then again for full wall. That could take the existing wall reaction, somewhat, and make it a more reasonable cost. It wouldn't be realistic in terms of how much concrete you need to fill a wall, but that might have to be done to make permanent walls accessible-ish. OR, instead of concrete walls, METAL Walls! :D Then we could make a possibly pipe bar fortress with the walls acting somewhat like windows by being non-smashable since they'd be made out of potentially lots of steel frames and also potentially be able to be shot through.

Also, since we can turn stuff into spears and various pointy weapons could we get a reaction to turn a heavy stick and a chunk of steel, maybe with some string to hold it together, into a hoe/shovel? Most of the issue with making them in meatspace is molding the metal so you don't have a crappy piece of equipment and getting them to stay together, but a welder might be able to heat the steel enough to make it malleable enough to mold. And a way to make a wood ax, preferably by the same reaction that makes the hoe/shovel. :D

I really don't like animal empathy that much. Perhaps I don't fully understand it? Sure, being able to stab a deer with your ring finger while it sits there and grazes is nice early on, but over time hunting for food becomes very, very easy. And, even when I do take animal empathy, wolves still run up to me at the same distance. Maybe they hesitate for a longer period before deciding to attack? But.. that matters little. It seems like once I catch the attention of a wolf, it'll eventually come down to killing it. And animal empathy doesn't seem to effect that eventuality.

Again I might be misunderstanding the skill, but it seems very sub-par.

I like animal empathy only partially for the free meat.  If I find trifflids I try to use them as a primary food source instead.  But the big thing is, that if the local wildlife dosn't flee from you thanks to animal empathy it's so much easier to maintain your weapon and survival skills by just stepping outside and plugging a few squirrels than going into town to kill zeds for the same thing.  It turns melee, gun, unarmed or throwing weapon training into a zero risk activity.  While if you don't have animal empathy you have to chase the damn things down.

To train up throwing I make a run to the forest and hulk smash some baby trees to get heavy sticks (twenty or thirty usually works, yay backpacks!) and then turn them into spears at my shelter. I then take the spears and throw them at squirrels. They usually don't run too far away from where I initially start throwing at them and after a few reloads I get a level up. Yeah, it's a bit grindy and I don't really get a whole lot of meat for the first several levels but once they start hitting I can start just taking a few spears out and go deer/wolf hunting for some proper meatstuffs.

Something odd happened with an NPC today: apparently it was running from some wolves from the area to my west and ran right into my shelter. It demanded I put down my weapon so I did and then exploded its head with the debugger since not going to let an NPC waste a good two (real) nights of surviving with a glitch. Now I have a UPS and some night amp goggles :D gonna have an easier time getting loot now I think ^_^

I've just encountered a rather strange bug; I'm on the version released on 2-2-13, which, if I understand correctly, is the newest stable version. It rewrote several of my keybindings, assigning "! or a or d or e or f or m or s or u" to Move NE and removing the keybindings for smashing and examining terrain, as well as for opening doors and applying/using items. Um. Not sure if this is a one-time thing or not, but it's certainly interesting. XD
