So what is the current state of tile support? I am looking forward to getting back into this game some day.

There are about 6 colors and maybe a dozen letters. Unless you are color blind this should not be difficult to deal with. I typically resist ASCII games but Cata is really light on the ASCII usage. There just isn't enough content to use it all.

We have an awesome few tilesets, and a couple older versions that support them.

Unfortunately, keeping the tileset code stuff up to date is /extremely hard/. We're hoping to get a proper implementation one of these days, hopefully soon

Until then, you can either use:
Tase's somewhat kind of recent not 100% complete version, here:
https://github.com/tasetase/DDAtase/tree/tiles

Or Deon or Fat Dogs old 1.6 tilesets.

Proper Multi-Z levels are planned right? I want to smash out a window on the 11th floor and judo throw a hulk to it's pavement-cracking doom.

tilesets
Even if we get tilesets, I won't use it. I think it would help the average new player a little bit, but honestly I never cared for them. Minor extended tileset support is great for the short-term, but if there's going to be a massive re-write for multi-Z levels I think there should also be a re-write of the tile system.

This game needs isometric perspective. Nothing fancy. I'm imagining something like the original X-COM. However, multi-Z levels and destructible terrain in a city-like environment absolutely demands an isometric presentation.

I agree that tilesets are needed when new players start their adventures in games like DF, but Cataclysm is so simple and intuitive, it really doesn't need a tileset.
And if it does, it has to be a bloody good one.

Zyxl: Tiles to isometric tiles is a huge leap o_O An entire different library for graphics has to be used, maybe smfl or Allegro, or some other graphics library out there.

I don't see why isometric view would be necessary. DF manages just fine without it.

For me personally, tilesets take away from the imagination but to each his own I suppose.

Maybe we'll adopt an isometric view but also leave everything as ASCII symbols.

You know, make everyone happy.

Sideways crooked ascii symbols would be amusing, and it would be a great Late April fools thing if you guys somehow made an optional 'isometric' mode that just rotated the font 45 degrees.

Jefmajor has uploaded a 0.4 Cataclysm video Here. Seems good so far at the halfway point.
