So if baseless speculation is all we have, we might as well treat it like fact.

Every time I get nice things the game insists on making something bad happen to me.

Got a Nodachi? Beaten up by a shocker brute, (but not killed since I manage to get a shotgun from the gunstore next door.) got a infection too, next day, start rummaging through houses, get first aid kit, cure infection, literally take 5 steps from the bath room and get shot to death by a chicken walker/tank drone. (it was dark so I couldn't see it.)

It used to be manageable in the earlier versions where the bad thing that the game sends is just a shocker zombie but now there's meaner stuff going around the game can kill me whenever the current game starts looking up.

I don't think any amount of advice can help you with getting attacked by random chicken walkers, but keep trying. I recently made a character with a pretty crap build (7 strength does not help melee, trust me) and I managed to survive long enough to get my melee skill to 8. Still alive, in fact, and doing pretty well.

Hah. Glad to know that the Savage 111F + sniper conversion is still as stupidly good as ever. Ran into a tankbot with that same martial arts character, but had found one a day earlier and managed to take it out with careful flanking and ambushes while it was surrounded by a horde. Unfriendly lasers indeed.

If it was dark, they shouldn't have been able to see you, either. Were you using a flashlight or something? If you want to avoid the more dangerous monsters, spend your first day or two looting the outskirts of town, gathering medical supplies and gearing up.

Also, chicken walkers create a lot of small explosions, while tank drones fire single shells at a time.

Just looked that up, and adding even more damage and accuracy to a Savage is ridiculous. When you say flanking, do you simply mean keeping the zombies between you and it or is it something more complex?

I played this a while back, when version 1.A had just come out, and I remember being quite annoyed at how cutting weapons worked, in that they would constantly get stuck in enemies, taking extra time to attack again.  This meant, cutting weapons DPS was much lower than their stats would otherwise suggest.

Has that been changed at all in the recent versions?

Sticking is very much strength-reliant. A character with low strength won't be able to use cutting weapons very well; you'll need at least 12 Strength to use them effectively.

That's actually a bad idea, since they can catch bullets.

I was in a town, so as soon as I saw it I crept into range behind buildings, stepped out, and fired. I quickly noticed that the tank drone seemed to target me more rapidly when I fired twice from the same place, so I kept kiting it around, getting in single shots from maximum range and then ducking back into cover. It helps quite a bit that the Savage + sniper mod has an absurd range, so once you have a lock you can fire well past the edge of the maximum-area screen.

Well, that sounds the same as before.  If you had low STR, the weapon would stick, and you wouldn't be able to get it out.
If you had higher STR, the weapon would stick, you'd automatically pull it out, and your attack would have taken about 3x the usual amount of time.  Essentially it meant the DPS on cutting weapons was about 1/3 of what it would be on a equivalent bashing weapon.

The amount of time it takes to pull it out is also STR dependent, not just a flat 3x (and has been that way for a long time now). As such higher strength means less wasted time pulling the things out when they get stuck. If you want I can pull the exact formula out of the code for you so you can see it.

Cutting weapons ARE basically useless in my experience. Get stuck in thing, pull other thing out, you're dead because the zombie{s} whaled on you for two turns while you have your weapon stuck in them. And the weapons with the IMPROVISED tag[ALL of them unless you get lucky or get 6-7 Fabrication and full metalsmithing gear]. I just stick with quarterstaffs and rapiers, because they are SO much less hassle for approximately the same effect.

My current 10s character is using a broadsword with frightening efficiency. Arcvasti is right, though; early-game bashing (makeshift crowbar) or stabbing (knife spear) weapons are a much safer bet than early-game cutting ones (crude sword). However, some of the best weapons in the game are cutting (diamond katana, broadsword, zweihander), and if you luck out and find a machete or a combat knife you can use them very effectively.

yeah sticking in also seems to be effected by skill in my experience, combat knives have way more damage late game than other weapons that I've tried.  Especially when they get crits, one shot a brute awhile back.
