I believe it runs off of a combination of item volume and the material of the item, with various thresholds that determine if an item burns instantly, if it burns over time, or if it is just scorched/damaged without being consumed.

You probably need a starter. Even in real life you can't just light a log straight on fire without some serious, well, firepower.

Well, using them for making a holy weapon is less sacrilegious than just burning them.

Nah, what you need is to find a church where the ridge caps of it's roof are made of lead (if you can make jacketed ammo then copper should work and be easier to find). Presumably since it is a part of a church it should count as blessed lead.
