Pfft. Come on, I don't exactly keep a repository of ASCII fonts for every occasion.

I suppose you don't normally pay great attention to this screen, but normally it's all in one font. If you like your text to be readable, it's the default 8x16 rectangular font, so normally square map features look stretched.

I made it so that the overmap loads a separately-defined font, like the main game view does. Now you can keep the readable vertically-stretched font for all text, inventory, messages, etc, and have the overmap be displayed non-stretched, in square font, possibly different from the font you use for the main view.

So.... this is useless to the non-tileset players? :P
I keed, I keed. Looks good. Hope you've got a pull request on it.

This isn't for tiles, this is sort of exactly the opposite. Well no, not exactly, but still. Tileset (as in, graphical tileset) users see the same overmap as the ASCII-users, so it's for everyone. Everyone who can dig into a few config files and set up a bitmap or square ASCII font.

And of course I have a PR on it. ^_^

I guess square alphanumerical sets are considered tilesets, too?

They are in Dwarf Fortress. It's a nomenclature problem, mostly.

In DF, alphanumerical ASCII sets are called 'tilesets', and graphics packs are called 'graphics sets'.
In CDDA, alphanumerical ASCII sets are called 'fonts', and graphics packs are called 'tilesets'.

If you dig all the way down to the base implementation they're very similar, but the libraries that handle them are a very clear distinction between the two for DDA.
DF's architecture might be different since I think it renders everything as tiles, but I'm no expert on DF internals, or even modding/configuration.

It's to do with how the raws handle it, yeah. Graphics packs require modifying the raws to work correctly.

First time playing: I find a power suit and power suit helmet, strip naked to put it on, go fight zombies and almost die. After running like a coward, I instead elect to try the much safer profession of house burglar. After stealing a frying pan and a bunch of books, I retire to a my shelter to bone up on my knife fighting. Soon, I grow hungry and attempt to kill, butcher and cook a moose. Steps 1 and 2 go well, but the attempt at cooking burns down the shelter. Unsure where to go from here, I save and ask the forums: Wat do?

Well, he was in power armor, so I don't see why not.

Revisit the house burglar profession, and stock up on foods. They're generally safer to eat than moose. Start looking for strategic targets on the map, you probably want to have a vehicle and some guns to go with it.

In other news, trying out various fonts for playing CDDA.

Any suggestions? I figure I might push for some bitmap defaults to be included in the game.

So I found a solar car, is it awesome? Didn't drive it home yet. I never seem to find any bicycles, though I'd imagine one would be pretty hot stuff in the post-apo setting. I guess I'll have to eventually start as a cyclist just for the folding bike.

It's frequently easier to make a pedal-powered car than a bicycle. Wheels are in greater supply, and you still need that foot crank.

No, I mean that you can make folding bikes with enough skill.

Maybe one day we can get easier vehicle controls and perhaps even (*le gasp*) vehicular fast travel. (Step in vehicle, set a destination on the map, you get driven there. Drive interrupted if road blocked or something.) I don't really use vehicles because it is too much trouble.

Yeah, I know. It's still easier to make a pedal-powered car, it's easier to find the parts. Same controls, same lightweight frame, same foot crank and chain, same saddle. But you can use any car wheels (which are plentiful) instead of specific bicycle wheels.

It'd kinda defeat the purpose of all the stuff in the way though, wouldn't it? I can't imagine getting around on the map without vehicles. Trouble or no, it's fast and you can ram away any monsters that pop up.
