Throwing rocks works as far as I know. I like to throw pointy sticks, seeing as they're really easy to make early on. Throwing in general is probably the way to go.

Hard science is like a sword, and soft science is like fear. You can use both to equally powerful results, but even if your opponent disbelieve your stabs, they will still die.

Does anybody here know good strategies for surviving zombie dogs? I usually just turn them off because they really put the game out of balance.
But is there any way to survive a zombie dog attack without a shotgun? I usually spawn in places without gun stores or gun stores placed deep inside a really zombie infested city.

Use weapons with high +to hit and have as little torso encumbrance as possible. For the very beginning, the makeshift crowbar has +2 to hit and a little later the various flavours of baseball bats are +3 to hit. Torso encumbrance is very important, though. Every point decreases melee skill by one, while +to hit increases it. I would never go with more than 1 torso encumbrance before having at least 2 in melee skill.

Also, don't run after them, just stop and wait for them to come at you.

Fire, a bow and arrow, traps.  Those normally work for me.  Otherwise follow the others suggestions regarding to hit bonuses.

KNIFE SPEAR. That is all. It has a good to-hit bonus, good damage, a block and very quick attacks. You need one level in Survival to make it, but it is SO WORTH IT.

EDIT: Did I mention you can make it out of the starting shelter if it isn't immediately covered in zombies?

You should also use traditional burning bushmurder tactics.

Well. Just lost another less-than-one-day game. My robocop survivor had made his getaway and after some exciting but fairly average zombie pulpings on the outside of town I entered a house to scavenge and draw a skeleton dog from outside, so I slammed a door in it's face and was headed out the back to try another. Then my character flashes red a bunch, game over. High green to everything battered with no armor and dead.

The combat log says a shocker brute took 15 turns to kill me. Which I could understand but... the dog and I were the only things in the house. I know. I checked. I'm just gonna set this aside until the game gets its shit together.

This game gets more updates and fixes in a single day than most other rogues get in a month :>

On that topic I thought I might drop this video here. It's a development video made by Narc, that utilizes the git records to show how the game files have developed from 2010 until the time the video was made. Each developer is represented by a flying icon, with each time they "zap" a file being some type of change made to that file. It really helps you get a feeling for just how many different people are helping to contribute to C:DDA and make the game work. :))

1) Were you playing with a tileset? Several of them don't have the basic "missing tiles" slots filled in, which can result in invisible enemies.
2) Shockers can stun you with their electrocuting move, which could have resulted in your (from your point of view) instantaneous death.

No tilesets. And I had checked the house and both alleys fully before, which is why the skeledog came in the window from the street. The house had two occupants... then I died to a nonexistent third.

I was just playing on one of the latest experimentals (2055, haven't checked for a newer one yet) and had the same problem as Darkmere.
It seems to be an issue where a creature is in a different place to where it's drawn. In my case, a coyote was  ripping my arms off, but was apparently on the other side of the room. It seems intermittent, but hopefully someone can figure out what's going on here.

The coyote thing might be related to the fact that they are faster than you and have a "hit and run" AI. If you are slowed down even a bit it's fully possible for a coyote to run in, bite you, and then run away before you have a chance to react. This can lead to the appearance that they are somehow hitting you at a distance (a fact which can be noticed if you stand there and wait, since you will get to see it move up to you).

That said if anyone has a save where they've got a monster somehow killing you where none exists (such as the mentioned shocker brute) then that would be helpful in proving the problem and solving it.

A hypothesis: the shocker brute could see further than the player, allowing it to get the jump on them.

EDIT: I really appreciate that we can get interrupted while picking stuff up or dropping them now.  In some old version I saw a zombear in the forest and decided to go kill it, to avoid getting surprised by it.  While I was picking up my equipment it broke in and mauled me almost to death before I finished picking up all my armour and weaponry.  I shot it point-blank with a metal crossbow bolt, but that wasn't enough to save me.  :irony:

This is what happens when we randomly murder people.

-snip-
That sounds like a potential lingering problem with the new pickup stuff. Do you have a save that can do it reproduceably? (Since I can't seem to replicate the problem).
